Guest guest
i haven't had much online time to search through/read many messages. i finally(after switching pediatricians) got a referral to a pediatric gastro. for collin. when i called the gastro last month, there was currently a 2 month waitlist for initial consult. fwiw, i've heard he's the best in our county. so, anyway miralax after our 5 days i say is definitely not a viable option. we only do the magnesium hydroxide as needed--should i be doing it every day? my initial thought is no, but our new pediatrician(1st time i met the guy, so i'm taking it as a grain of salt) was saying it's a matter of giving collin enough & often. any dietary changes, not sure that will happen since collin's autism & picky eating go hand in hand. what else would the gastro recommend for us? what questions should i be asking at the consult? this is definitely uncharted territory for me. mindy
Guest guest
another thought, should i be doing something like a food log for collin & a chart on how much/often he has a bm? just guestimating..i'd say he spends half the month being really constipated and the rest of the month trying to get it all out of him. mindy > > i haven't had much online time to search through/read many messages. i > finally(after switching pediatricians) got a referral to a pediatric > gastro. for collin. when i called the gastro last month, there was > currently a 2 month waitlist for initial consult. fwiw, i've heard he's > the best in our county. > > so, anyway miralax after our 5 days i say is definitely not a viable > option. we only do the magnesium hydroxide as needed--should i be doing > it every day? my initial thought is no, but our new pediatrician (1st > time i met the guy, so i'm taking it as a grain of salt) was saying > it's a matter of giving collin enough & often. > > any dietary changes, not sure that will happen since collin's autism & > picky eating go hand in hand. what else would the gastro recommend for > us? what questions should i be asking at the consult? this is > definitely uncharted territory for me. > > mindy >
Guest guest
I think a food and BM diary are very helpful. Probably need to do this for several months to really see any patterns emerging that relate the constipation to any food intolerance(s). I think in some cases, there can be a slight delay between consumption of an " offending " food and actual appreciable constipation. I'd guess that only by charting everything for several months can one really determine which, if any, particular food(s) are troublesome. Also, if the magnesium is helping, it is probably something that is needed daily. The dose for daily " maintenance " may be less than what's required when one waits until obvious constipation and needs to get things going, but it might take some tinkering with the dose to get a good balance. Magnesium hydroxide has an antacid capacity so want to give quite separate from meals or consider switching to another form of magnesium. > > > > i haven't had much online time to search through/read many > messages. i > > finally(after switching pediatricians) got a referral to a > pediatric > > gastro. for collin. when i called the gastro last month, there was > > currently a 2 month waitlist for initial consult. fwiw, i've heard > he's > > the best in our county. > > > > so, anyway miralax after our 5 days i say is definitely not a > viable > > option. we only do the magnesium hydroxide as needed--should i be > doing > > it every day? my initial thought is no, but our new pediatrician > (1st > > time i met the guy, so i'm taking it as a grain of salt) was saying > > it's a matter of giving collin enough & often. > > > > any dietary changes, not sure that will happen since collin's > autism & > > picky eating go hand in hand. what else would the gastro recommend > for > > us? what questions should i be asking at the consult? this is > > definitely uncharted territory for me. > > > > mindy > > >
