I spent today with an "Occupational Specialist". He is a really nice guy, but his whole job is to deal with Workers Comp patients and determine if it was really an occupational exposure. I guess I passed his test because he ordered a load of testing for tomorrow. Also I see a pulmonologist tomorrow. He wants to do the methacoline test because there is some question as to whether this is "true" asthma because I have always been so atypical and hard to treat. The methacoline really scares me. My docs at home haven't done it because I react so violently, and why would we want to purposely cause me to possibly tank? Well, I guess I will already be at the hospital (and a specialty one at that). So, what better place to do it? There are also all the spirometry testing to do tomorrow. It looks like it will be a looooooooooong day. I will touch base at some point tomorrow night. Love you all! Madeline
Guest guest
well if u've already always reacted violently that should give you red flags there. I think doing that test is unnecessary and more of step for him to believe in his patients, and he shouldn't have to have a special test just for that. What he should be doing instead is maybe specific allergy tests and matching them up to things at work, and then saying oh yeah i can see why and how this would cause you long term damage at work. The methachlorin test still doesn't tell you why and how you reacted to WHICH chemical or air problem at work. In the end, he's spinning his wheels. You already know you have asthma. How many doctors have already acknowledge you have asthma? And he thinks he's better than they are so he has to start all over from scratch at your expense?? Being hard to treat can also and MORE often than not doesn't mean you don't mean asthma, but means you have asthma AND other things going on. Also think about your family history. How many people already have asthma? It's kind of ridiculous to start over and do the M test if Uncle Bob and Sue, and half your siblings have asthma too. Another thing he should be looking at is whether your breathing is noisy on inhale or exhale. Asthma people are taught to only look at exhaling, and that if they can't hear you wheeze on exhale then your not sick. The problem is that many more difficult to treat and figure out breathing illnesses exist and are recognized on INHALING, not exhaling. I've also noticed that docs when listening to you breathe. They'll do the stethoscope and say take a deep breath. Then exhale, then he lifts the stethoscope, exhale ( while its back on) , then lifts it again while your inhaling again, like every time he's lifted the stethoscope every time you inhale, and only kept it on while you exhale. How many of you have seen your docs do this? Many doctors are charlatans and don't even realize it....or maybe they think it in their mind; because they know certain things could be found but they only want to look at mufflers on the car so to speak, and just pass it on to someone else. But they'll tell you, a different story. If you have a family history of asthma, and have already seen some other docs that were VERy good, then I saw you should go to someone else and not waste your time and money with this guy. Guest guest
Take care Madeline. Keep us updated. Cheryl Burton ncicheryl@... At Mayo Hi all we made it in last night safe and sound. Madeline
