Methotrexate & alcohol

Hi Out There - At the risk of giving the impression that I might have a

" drinking

problem " I'd like to ask if anyone has had any experience with it. I have a

group of friends who enjoy an occasional evening out for dinner and a few

alcoholic

drinks. These outings, I miss since my doctor has told me you cannot use alcohol

when taking Methotrexate. I have followed his instructions but have heard from

some folks who have said that their doctors have told them that a few drinks

occasionally would do no harm. Does anyone know or have experience in this area?

Living alone especially with RA becomes quite boring at times and I miss the

companionship of my friends but it is easier to just stay at home than to go

and not join in.

Just wondering, Betty

Hello, Betty!

Sorry to be a party pooper, but abstaining completely from alcohol is by

far the safest approach when you are on methotrexate since the

combination of alcohol and methotrexate increases the chance of liver

damage. I wouldn't risk it, especially if your doctor said to avoid

alcohol.

How about going out with your friends but ordering a non-alcoholic, fun

drink? They have lots of them on the menus these days.
