I don't think the rash is from going in the pull-up -- I suspect it's burning from the Miralax. It always burned coming out when my daughter took it, and she would cry and cry when we had to change a diaper. I would give lots of probiotics to help normalize things -- it should help greatly with the rash and may firm the poop up a little too if it's too fluid.

Let's hope that since it seems to be coming out quickly, rather than staying in her system, that you won't see long-term side effects. As a first resort for occasional constipation, our holistic pediatrician recommends probiotics and Swiss Kriss. Many people here would add magnesium and all the other things you mentioned to the list...

Bonnie

Hi! I'm new here and concerned about giving my daughter PEG. She will

be 5 years old next month. I took her to the Dr. last Wednesday

because she always pooped every day at least once a day and then just

quit, and started going about once a week. I'm pretty sure it was

constipation but she might be holding it for some reason. She had

occasionally gotten fissures and said it hurt when she went. Anyway,

the doctor said she has probably been constipated for a long

time...several months and that she needed to take fiber in her diet,

said it is not addictive and it's just fiber so it's fine for her.

Then he perscribed Polyethelyne Glycol and said to give her double

the adult dose and then cut it back after she starts going normal,

and then continue for at least six months because it takes a long

time to get it cleared out. He said that this " constipation " is

probably causing her potty training/incontinence issues as well.

It all sounds fishy to me. First of all, how can a child be

constipated when she has been going every day like clockwork since

she was born? Secondly, PEG is NOT fiber! Thirdly, why would a child

need double the adult dose? Fourthly, Why would she have to take it

so long? Fifthly, Why don't the Dr.'s prescribe prunes (juice),

metamucil, magnesium, vitamins, or some other natural foods/remedies?

Anyway, against my better judgment, after reading that the label says

don't give it to children and that it should not be taken for more

than two weeks, I gave her a (double) dose, as prescribed. And the

next day another, and by the next day she had pooped so many times in

her pants, uncontrollably, I gave her a reg. dose. and she still kept

going. All day for four days after I started giving it to her, I did

nothing but clean up poop! And I dont think she could ever tell it

was coming. After the third day, I quit giving it to her. We're on

day six and she is still pooping in her pants (now pull ups, I had to

toss too many underwear) It's still not going back to normal. I am

worried about her and don't know what to do. I don't know if it would

be okay to give her some kind of fiber suppliment to get her regular,

or just wait it out till she gets normal agian. She is getting a rash

today and probably yeast from going in the pull-up, she never did

well with pull-ups anyway, they always caused her to get yeast

infections. I don't want to take her back to the doctor becuase

they'll just prescribe something else that isn't healthy for her. I

am willing to give her anything natural such as food, drink, vitamins

or minerals, but I don't like drugs of any kind. I am desperately

hoping that someone here will give me some good advise, and praying

that no permanent damage will come of my giving it to her for a few

days.

I'll search the boards and hope for your replies. I'm glad I found

this group, and glad to know I'm not the only concerned mother out

there who has questioned this drug.

You are not alone! Drs are so busy anymore they don't have much

time to read and research. When they do, the pharmaceutical

companies have made sure that the only research that makes it into

JAMA and other 'legitimate' medical publication are the ones about

pharma -- not natural medicine. I'm beginning to think their grip on

us is waning -- about 75% of people have tried some type

of 'complementary medicine'. Ok -- now I'll get off my soapbox.

Since she is 5 -- I have to ask -- when did she receive her 5 yr

boosters -- could it be linked to the constipation?

The previous yeast infections comment makes be think that you might

see some good relief with probiotics.

KidCalm or Natural Calm is a good first step.

Read the files section for posts of 'what's worked'

Fiber is important, but it's best to get it from fruit and vegetable -

grains can have the opposite effect.

Bonnie & mommtlc,

Thanks for your quick replies. The comment about it not having any

lasting effects is comforting. She is a bit of a fire-cracker now,

and I don't need any other behavior issues, she is pretty healthy

too, but she had asthma when she was a baby and seeing some info on

mirilax causing breathing problems worried me.

She likes fruits and veggies so I will try to give her more. I've

been giving her yogurt too but I know that is not enough. Where can

you get the probiotics? I don't want to order them and wait a week or

longer to get them. Is there something I can get her at the grocer or

at Wal-mart that I can give her now? until I can order it? Or can I

get that at the store? If not, where do I order it? What's the brand?

As far as her boosters, she got all of them, I believe it was in

March. No more shots until she's nine or so. I dont think that caused

any problems. I never thought the Mirilax would cause burning, thats

aweful!!! I used to take metamucil for IBS, and I just compared it to

that, not realizing the toxicity of it. The rash " dots " and red skin

just happened today, but it happened just like that, she didn't sit

in it or anything, she told me right when she went. She didn't want

me to clean her up because it hurt so bad. I put her in a bath with

some oatmeal and all I could think of was to put gyne lotramin yeast

medicine on it, I hope that isn't toxic too!

What is swiss kriss? what is the best brand of probiotic (without

paying a fortune) and how much do i give her, do they have dosages

for children or is it the same as adults? Any ideas on how to get

things to firm up (food ideas) until i can get to the store to get

probiotics. Is cranberry good for that too? And, sorry for all my

questions, but I think this is the best place to find the RIGHT

answers, And I do have one more...where and how do you find a

hollistic pediatrician? And just in case anyone is close, I live NE

of Dallas about 30-40 miles. So If you know of one local,

please...let me know. I hate taking my kids to the doctor because

they always try to prescribe drugs that they dont need, and many that

are questionable like PEG. I'd be willing to pay cash (if they dont

take my insurance) for a doctor that would tell me how to keep my

kids healthy instead of giving them stuff that will make them sicker

in the longrun. ie: antibiotics, allergy meds, PEG, etc.

So, does anyone know about this constipation that my doctor said she

had, He said she can be constipated for a long time and still have

normal bowel movements. It sounds rediculous to me, but I don't know

everything, yet, so maybe someone can explain it to me....if there is

such a thing.

Thanks again for your help!

hi

i have a 4 yr old that we give 1/4 tsp of magnesium citrate powder to

daily ( www.kirkmanlabs.com) and that is how we got her off of

miralax.

She hates hates hates the taste. I am looking for a new alternative

but have not found one.

I know white rice, banana's, and bread stop things up for most people.

My girl used to get horrible yeast rashes before and during

miralax....but since then we give probiotics and no problems like that

anymore...

If you ahve a Kroger foods they have children's chewable probiotics.

Walmart has next to nothing for probiotics. A health food store like ?

wild oats or trader joes or some place like that will havfe a great

selection of probiotics. I buy them locally usually but I have also

ordered them from the above mentioned kirkman labs and have been very

pleased with their products.

BTW- immunizations caused my daughter to have constipation...then she

was put on daily antibiotics for 2 years and she was then dx as autism

spectrum which we think was a side effect to her messed up immune

system from the immunizations and antibiotics..... We took her off of

the daily antibiotics which were for urinary reflux (no problems

thankfully) - and she started com,ing out of the autism

spectrum....after probiotics she really came back to us....now she is

doing great! I would have never been one to believce that these

things could affect someone like this if I did not see it myself!

Anyway, gld you are here. These women have taught me a lot!
