Can someone explain to me about IGE levels? hugsKaybeez wrote: Do you really think prednisone lowers IGE? I thought

The prednisone hassuppressed them some. As of yesterday they were 270. Still way high(should be around 30). We tried the Xolair for 3 months with noclinical effect. It just did not work for me.

Barbara, I'm so sorry for being so rude, I don't think I ever welcomed you to the group. I'm Terry From Southern MD and have had asthma for 3 years and am still learning ALOT especially from this group, You'll love this group, Looks like you've already made some connections. Shew I'm off to bed, I can hardly keep my eye's open tonight. Been working on Soccer stuff, 20 year class reunion stuff, My Space page. very time consuming. I look forwarding to getting to know you!

Do you really think prednisone lowers IGE?

I thought normal levels were 114? I think 270 is very good.

I am at my best right now at 1025. I wonder if I will get anywhere near the normal range.

According to the specialized pulmonologist at the Mayo Clinic the

steroids do suppress IGE. He said that anything over 30 indicates an

allergic reaction, but to be considered for Xolair it had to be over

100 (that may be where the 114 number comes in). He also indicated

that most insurances won't cover it unless the number is a good bit

higher than that. The first time I tested last September my number

was 430 and just slowly climbed to 570 (I think I said 560 before).

Hi

Madeline,

Again

thank you for that information. I get copies of my blood tests and that’s

where I saw 114.

I thought

if your IGE was high you would produce loads of mucus as a reaction to an allergen.

I am over

1,000 and at this time that is not happening.

My

symptoms seem more like asthma with shortness of breath, tightness and fatigue.

If people with asthma are under 1,000 then I wonder I am still so high? Does

anyone else on the list have any information?

> Xolair can take a year or longer sometimes to reach any benefits

Three months does not seem very long to decide it wasn't working. Was

it your decision to stop or someone else's. If you have coverage for

this drug you may want to give it another try. It has taken me off of

oral steroids and others who were on a 60 mg. maintanance dose of

prednisone. I like being able to breathe with the windows open and my

neighbors cutting grass everyday. Sharon

Sharon,

From my understanding is that 6 months is the norm for determination

of effectiveness of Xolair. Our decision was made by the fact that

while I was on it my IEG numbers kept climbing and I was

deteriorating. Actually ended up in the hospital 3 times. At the end

of the 3 months it was a joint decision by me and my doc to

discontinue it. From my research and his knowledge, I should have at

least seen a stability in my IEG numbers at that point, and as I said

they were continuing to climb. We may try it again at a later point,

but right now the steroid issue is the big thing on our list. Also

starting pulmonary rehab on the 21st to try to rebuild some smooth

muscle wall strength.

Not all allergy attacks involve lots of mucus. I've had plenty of

severe allergy attacks that manifested as shortness of breath only:

no runny nose, no itchy eyes, no coughing. With my food allergies,

which can easily get my asthma going, I can't even say my stomach

bothers me.
