Questions about arthritis? Dial a doctor, get an answer

October 21, 2002

ROCKY HILL -- On Wednesday, the Arthritis Foundation will sponsor

Dial-a-Doctor, a two-hour call-in where people from the community can ask

arthritis-related questions of a local arthritis specialist from 7 to 9 p.m.

The Dial-a-Doctor number is 1-800-541-8350.

Sanatham Lakshminaraya-nan, M.D., a rheumatologist and assistant professor

of medicine at UConn Health Center in Farmington, is volunteering his time

to answer questions free about the diagnosis and treatment of arthritis.

Past callers have also asked about symptoms, prescription drugs, alternative

treatments and how to work with their own doctor. The service is supported

this year by an unrestricted educational grant to the Arthritis Foundation

from Wyeth-Ayerst Laboratories and Immunex Corp.

The Arthritis Foundation sponsors the dial-a-doctor program on the fourth

Wednesday of every month from September through June and on the third

Wednesday in November and December.

One in three adults in Connecticut live with arthritis or chronic joint

pain.

Moreover, arthritis is one of the more common childhood diseases affecting

285,000 children nationally.

The mission of the Arthritis Foundation is to improve lives through

leadership in the prevention, control and cure of arthritis and other

related diseases.

The Southern New England Chapter provides services for Connecticut and Rhode

Island.

For information on available programs, making a donation or participating in

local programs or events, call 1-800-541-8350, or email the Arthritis
