Guest guest
Does anyone happen to know whether the modified Airstreams are resistant to mould growth ? Thanks for this info. - B.
Guest guest
Hi , well in my limited understanding, from the research my friend did a few years ago, these are custom-built jobs, to your own specifications. So, that might be a priority for you (and me, and so many IMHO). I could see if my friend still has the contact info for the guy who was doing this specialty work if you want (feel free to email me offlist for this). It ain’t cheap…can’t really remember but I think it was around $30-40,000, including the Airstream itself, they don’t come cheap and must be stripped down to the shell and completely rebuilt inside. You would probably have to have some sort of dehumidifying system to counteract moisture buildup (from doing dishes cooking, washing etc.) in such a small space. Of course if anyone else has more info I too would love to hear it, as I am considering a similar idea for myself. One issue with Airstreams is that they are COLD, I was living in one place with one as a second bedroom that my then-teenaged daughter slept in. And it took 2 heaters and she was still cold, and we live on the we(s)t coast. If I’m going north as I’d like, anything would have to be super-insulated! I was looking at ads for mobile homes today, and saw both super-insulated ones and ones with woodstoves in them. That would keep you warm anywhere! You know, come to think of it, another friend of mine got one of the homes very much like the ones on that website (though not necessarily built for chemmie sensitivities) as an extra bedroom for her teenaged daughter, and it’s just great – I liked it more than an Airstream, or a mobile home even, because it is wider and more open and spacious-feeling inside. Of course you would have to fit more stuff in if you were going to live in it full time – kitchen, bathroom, places for your stuff (this can be very efficient like on a boat). And you either need a big enough rig to haul it or be able to hire such as needed. Aylwin xox
