Hi, Lou,

<<<<<Does anyone know what Scleroderma is? Is that the only thing that goes

with Nucleola pattern?

For 10 years my ANA pattern has always been Homogeneous and Speckled.

Why would it change to a different pattern now that I've never had?

What things go with the Nucleola pattern?>>>>

Typically positive ANA results go with SLE, systemic lupus erythematosis. Lupus

is usually associated with a butterfly-shaped rash across the face, but it is

extremely variable in its presentation. Lupus patients are usually extremely

photosensitive - they sunburn in minutes, and can get 2nd and 3rd degree burns

from sun exposure that would not e en tan most of us.

Scleroderma, like lupus, is an autoimmune disorder. Scleroderma is the hardening

of various areas of the body - hopefully only the skin (hence the -derma in its

name; the hardening areas take on somwhat the feel of fingernail tissue), but

there is a systemic scleroderma that includes the hardening (and loss of

function) of internal organs. Kidneys seem to be most susceptible, possibly

because they cannot regenerate to repair damaged areas.

The ANA pattern changing means that the exact antibody that is being produced

has changed. Nucleolar autoantibodies are more often seen with lupus than with

scleroderma, but other symptoms are needed for a solid diagnosis.

Many of us with CFS have positive ANA tests at some time - in my own case it has

been highly positive (speckled pattern) on two occassions, lasting for several

months each. I did not have any particular increase or decrease in symptoms

during those episodes.

I hope I have answer your questions without causing more confusion. Otherwise,

please feel free to email me directly.

Jerry
