Guest guest
Hi Everyone, I joined this group recently and have found lots of valuable information. My 11 year old son was scoped last week and has lympocetic colitis. He has tended toward constipation for years now and probiotics usually make it worse. We were forced to try a couple medications for migraine and anxiety about 9 months ago which led to severe constiaption. Tye was not able to poop at all. We did finally do miralax for several months and then stopped when I realized what kind of damage that was probably doing. Currently there are a myriad of things going on but one of the most concerning is that the constipation is ramping up again. He had been going daily on Mag Citrate and Cascaracom (herbal). When they scoped him he was full of stool (this was after what we thought was a cleanout). I decided to try Mag Glycinate to see if that would get things moving more throughly than the mag citrate but it backfired and he hasn't pooped since. The Mag Glycinate (I learned since) is high in oxalates and that is a huge problem despite being LOD for over a year. Oxalates are being produced by the yeast in his systema and also all the miralax I gave probably converted to oxalaic acid. Since the miralax and increased oxalte load Tye cannot tolerate many phenols, salicalates etc...... so I can't use prune or plum juice to help get him going. I have gone back to the Mag citrate and Cascaracom but what else to try? We are starting to do distilled water and olive oil enemas today on the advice of our nutritionist. No kid wants to be put through that but we have to get this "crap" out of him. Any suggestions? Thanks, Carole
Guest guest
Carol, each probiotic contains different ingredients, maybe he was reacting to some ingredient in it, have you tried different ingredients in different probiotics? Guest guest
We mostly tried the Kirkmans probiotics at that time and he was noticeably more constipated. Then our DAN recommended some others (which I can't remember the brand) that were supposedly more powerful and that was even worse. For years after we didn't do probiotics and Tye at least had normal looking b.m.'s though not daily. We started a probiotic from Young Living called Life 5 in May (long after all the constipation was going on) because the yeast was so high and natural anti-fungals were not helping. This may be adding to the constipation issue. We are planning to do more testing (stool test from Metametrix) to figure out what is going on bug-wise in there. When he was scoped a couple weeks ago it was evident he was not cleaned out in fact he was full of stool. We have been using mag citrate (Gillhams calm brand) and enemas for over a week now trying to open him up. We have increased to 1200mg a day of mag and have seen what I think of as oxalate sx. inrcreasing. Bright red fingertips, agitation, hitting himself in the head and eye pain. His citric acid is very high from his last OAT in June and I guess mag citrate is made from citric acid so this may explain these sx. and his intolerance to using it at a high level. Mag Glycinate definitly is not an option. Anyone use Mag malate or an Ionic form of magnesium? I guess we need to get him cleaned out with a high dose of something and then maintain his bowel function for quite a while at a lower dose. His scope showed he has lymphocetic colitis which we need to start treating right away but I'm tr ying to get him unblocked first, he can barely digest anything w/out a lot of G.I. pain. Guest guest
, I think we will lower the mag citrate a lot and add in the mag malate. I'll order some s aloe Vera juice. We used that years ago and it was very effective initially though it seemed to not be enough eventually. Are you suggesting using the Fleet enemas as they come? We were going through this last spring and used those for a cleanout but Tye was very irritated by them. I know we are not yet cleaned out though so I may try it. His nutritionist and the DAN we use both recommended water enemas with some olive oil so they would not be too drying. I am not thinking we will do many more as it's supposed to be a short term thing. Guest guest
Hi Carole, Regarding the enemas, I would go with what works better with your son - they can be traumatizing enough without the additional side effects. Sounds like a good plan with the mag - the mag malate did work to keep my kids going, so maybe with the mag citrate on top of it, it will be enough to move the blockage out. If you don't have much luck with s, consider trying a good aloe vera juice that isn't as refined. s didn't work for us, probably because of that reason, but we have had luck with others (although the taste is an issue). I've also had good luck with the No-Fenol enzyme by Houston Nutraceuticals - it tends to soften stools, which has allowed us to reduce the amount of daily mag citrate my kids take. You could also try glycerin suppositories, though they never worked as well as enemas for us. Good luck and hang in there!! constipation Hi everyone, I'm running into issues trying to clear my son's blockages with Mag Citrate. Guest guest
Hi Carole, I'm sorry - I've forgotten if you've mentioned any dietary restrictions - is he gluten-free and/or casein-free? I think lymphocytic colitis can be associated with gluten-intolerance (and probably other food intolerances - read more here: http://thefooddoc.blogspot.com/). We've used " Mega Mag " ionic magnesium. It seems to work fine, except that it tastes terrible so I can only give about 3-6 drops per about 4-6oz of drink. I think about 18 drops equals about 400 mg magnesium. So, I combine with other magnesium form(s) instead of trying to get enough Mega Mag in (I find that if he gets his whole dose of magnesium at one time it is more effective than spreading it out over the day.) Have you tried OxyPowder (http://www.oxypowder.com/ingredients) or magnesium peroxide? We haven't tried oxypowder but I did find a mag peroxide at a HFS (can't remember the name brand right now) and it worked well. Also - have you tried Epsom Salt baths? Can add some bicarbonate, too, which can help alleviate some of the oxalate symptoms you describe. Epsom Salt baths can help with oxalates and with constipation. hth... best, > > Hi everyone, > I'm running into issues trying to clear my son's blockages with Mag Citrate. Guest guest
I will check this site and thank you. I have been googling lymphocetic colitis and not found much so far. I also have almost no time to look. Tye has been casein and gluten free for almost 8 years, corn, rice, soy and potato free for 1.5 years (trying to be SCD legal) though he has not done well on the nut flours I've tried so we dtill use a four bean flor mix for baked goods. LOD for 1.5 years. He is not able to digest any red meat w/out a lot of pain (since the Spring) which is when all these sx. worsened. I think the Nortriptylene was the catalyst for this as the constipation issue became severe while on it. Oxy-powder keeps Tye awake in the night. I've tried it several times, even at a very low dose. The deal with epsom salts is that we used them very successfully when we started LOD and they helped with the urinary frequency and other dumping sx. In the Spring when the severe constipation set in Tye's belly would blow up with any bath so I had to avoid them. I tried doing the epsom sponge baths and he became very agitated after each one. I don't know if the problem was how it felt on his skin or more of a neuro reaction. I know he really needs a good form of detoxing like the epsom. Maybe I will try a short bath today. It's very difficult to tell how much of the constipation has cleared at this point. Guest guest
Carole For us, VSL#3 (a probiotic that is prescribed for colitis) helped a TON with oxalate issues. We used the vitamin K protocol (without the potassium iodide). The cod liver oil and essential fatty acid are very important. Also, I think that liver and kidney support is very important when you are dumping oxalates. CoQ10 and Milk Thistle being the biggest helps - Liverlife is also very helpful. And the baths as Tracie mentioned. Try Renew Life KidLax too -- it's pretty natural and 2 capsules in the morning yields results by evening. > > > > Hi everyone, > > I'm running into issues trying to clear my son's blockages with Mag > Citrate.
