Guest guest
hi! i was just wondering, is it possible to have an asthma attack without the wheezing? i sometimes have DOB(difficulty of breathing) but without the wheezing sound, is that asthma attack too? Guest guest
Yes, the underlying cause and first thing that happens in an asthma attack is airway inflammation. This will decrease air flow. This is why peak flow meter readings are important. You can start loosing air flow before wheezing is heard. Doing peak flow readings every day will show if your air flow is decreased. Then you can take your medications according to your asthma action plan. So yes you can have an asthma attack with out wheezing however I would imagine it would be a mild attack. As always talk to your doctor before making any changes to medications or therapy. My advise is for personal knowledge only to help you talk to your doctor on a more informed basis. > > hi! i was just wondering, is it possible to have an asthma attack > without the wheezing? i sometimes have DOB(difficulty of breathing) > but without the wheezing sound, is that asthma attack too? >
Guest guest
I never wheeze. However, I usually cough. A lot. The last couple of asthma attacks I have had I didn't even cough, however there was a good bit of lung pain and tightness involved. The best way to tell is by your peak flow numbers. If you are in your green zone, then it is not your asthma. Guest guest
wow! My idea of an asthma attack is wheezing and coughing. If I don't have those, I don't consider it an attack, and don't worry about it. I have never had lung pain....the only time I had lung pain was the only time I had pneumonia It enlightens me to see the different definitions of asthma, and maybe I grew up with tightness and consider it normal. I guess I am leaning too far into the word attack...and attack is usually eye-opening in my little world. I realize that everyone's asthma is different, but if I had lung pain...I would be finding out why. When I was younger I used to get colds that caused what they called pleurisy....and those would subside, but I never associated it with my asthma. The pleurisy would cause sore tender pains usually located in one spot in my " lung chest area " . I assumed it was fluid collected in my lungs from the cold that I had caught, and had to dry up on it's own. That brings us another oddity I have experienced....I had 4 c-sections and each one of those I had to do stuff with breathing technicians while I was in the hospital, because of my asthma. Each time I had severe pain that radiated up into my shoulders, and they said it was normal and was from fluid. It would subside within a day. These are just thoughts and words. I am no expert, but I am an old asthmatic with moderate-severe asthma who just wants to share my experiences. love, Cindi Madeline wrote: > > I never wheeze. However, I usually cough. A lot. Guest guest
I rarely wheeze. The few times I have been heard wheezing, it was a "barely there" thing. One time I couldnt stay awake and slept roughly 36 hours out of 48. My ox sats were only down to 95% but I was clearly having issues. My doctors Physician Assistant was one who was willing to think outside the box and go out on a limb..and did a PFT which showed me having the lungs of a 43 yr old smoker when I was 29. We did a breathing treatment and got completely different, almost normal results after the neb tx. I didnt have a peak flow meter then. The last time they heard wheezing was last spring...and my pf was in the red. They wouldnt give me a neb treatment but I did get a steroid shot and a bunch of stuff that worked. McCain or Obama? Guest guest
Cindi, The docs tell me that the pain is caused because my the muscles of my lungs have gotten so weak that they just seize up (kind of like a major charlie horse). In fact the first time it happened I thought it was a heart attack, it never crossed my mind that it was an asthma attack. Took the ER doc to tell me that it was my lungs (very ironic when we are constantly complaining about ER docs. LOL) Madeline > > > > I never wheeze. However, I usually cough. A lot. Guest guest
cannot you do exercises that strengthen the lungs? I don't know if I will ever get to that point...are you old? Exercise....push your lungs to the limit that you are slightly uncomfortable with...day by day you might see some results? muscles are made to either work or not...do not let those muscles go!!! Walking hard would be a good start... I am sad to see you are letting muscles go to waste. You can control those! Guest guest
I have been doing breathing exercises every day, but they are not enough. Too much muscle damage has been done, especially in the bottom half of the lungs. However, I start respiratory therapy tomorrow. I just hope they don't try to push me over the edge. LOL. I think therapy and equate it with pain as the only therapy I have ever had was after knee surgery. I have played french horn and several other instruments for 22 years now until that major attack in May that was brought on by the ozone exposure. I still get my horn out and play several times a week, but it does not sound like a french horn and I can only get out about 5 notes in the very mid range. However, it makes me draw in those breaths and work my diaghram and muscles as much as possible. Best breathing exercise I know. My doc said it was brilliant, but it is just not enough to reverse the damage already done. In fact without the steroids, it is not enough to prevent the progression of the weakness and shrinking of the lungs. We are really hoping that the respiratory therapists have a few more tricks up their sleeves! Madeline > > > > > > > > I never wheeze. However, I usually cough. A lot. Guest guest
maybe we are catching one of 1000 readers of this list then....do not let those muscles go before it is too late. One has to understand muscle damage to fix it. They may be damaged, but they are never too much damage. Keep your head up, and please other readers take heed! Control your lung muscles!!!! Do not let them control you.Do not let them tell you that too much damage has been done. Walk fast, bicycle, go uphill a short hill, but do not give in. You will appreciate this in the end. ok, I will shut up for a while. Madeline wrote: > > I have been doing breathing exercises every day, but they are not > enough. Guest guest
Cindi, Keep encouraging us (me). We all need a swift kick in the rear from time to time! I have just been so limited for so long now (well 6 months, but that feels like forever!). I am having a tendency to be a bit pessimistic today, which is unlike me. May be the methotrexate talking tonight. I took my weekly dose this morning & I have noticed it does tend to affect my mood a bit for a couple of days. This is my 3rd dose, and the last two have made me very tired on Tues, Wed, and Thurs. I am just hoping I am not so exhausted tomorrow with the beginning of the therapy. Guest guest
Madeline!!! That is what is happening to me exactly. I left work yesterday and went to ER. Was there for 9 hours. They took blood, xrays, urine and and ultrasound. My back, say, across the bra strap area, has been seizing up for the last week or so to where I cannot move or breathe. The pain is horrendous. I will be calling my dr in a few to see if she has any results from the ultrasound. I wish I had had your email yesterday to take with me to ER. They gave me scripts for Motrin, Vicodine and Robaxin. Guest guest
Sounds very similar except my pain shoots up through the front. Careful with all those meds. I know what the Motrin is, but I don't know what the others are. You may want to make a call to your doc just to make sure there aren't any reactions with other stuff you are taking. Or you may already know and not need me to tell you what to do! LOL! I know how painful that is. I am so sorry you are going through that. Madeline > > > > > > I never wheeze. Guest guest
vicodin is a pain killer. I had it prescribed to me for a very infected painful spider bite.
