Guest guest
Hi Blair, How's the Armour working for you? Echinacea is a herb that is only to be used for a very short time - not over six weeks. I don't know the exact reason it is " bad " for AI patients. I do know that I don't use it for two reasons. 1) It increases production of Killer T cells and my anti-thyroid antibodies don't need to increase, period... 2) The white cell count will go down significantly in non-AI people, so why would I want to take anything that would decrease my white cells... There are a number of AI supportive supplements that work. Have you ever tried Moducare? It works wonderfully if you take it consistently. As for colds, I haven't had one since getting rid of gluten in my diet. I always give Zicam to my kids and the cold goes away or only lasts a few days. We have no other cold meds in our house. Guest guest
I agree that echinacea should not be used on a regular basis. When I use it, it only use it when I feel like I'm coming down with something and maybe take it for 2 weeks max. > > > > > > Hashimoto's people have VERY active immune systems. Guest guest
bj, I have been considering the Moducare. Do you find it helps with the hashi's at all? Supposedly it's supposed to normalize either over- or under-active immune systems, so I wondered if it would lower antibodies. Guest guest
BJ, I've been on 30mg of Armour for a little over a month and find that my stamina and endurance are slowly returning where before under Levoxyl (50mcg) consistent workouts became impossible. I've been having some muscular abdominal aches and pains, and yet again, in my lower back but assume that's part of the transitioning onto the more potent T3 form of treatment. I'm also a bit more fatigued but from the results ofmy saliva tests this is most probably due to my not supporting my adrenals and gonad hormones to provide a workable balance betw all three glandular systems. So in essence, I'm a work in progress like everyone else here. =) This does interest me however, if you've found evidence to support that those of us with Hashi's suffer adverse long-term effects when taking Echinacea to bolster/support our immune systems(?). Moducare you say? I'll definitely be looking into it. Thanks!! -Blair > > > > > > > > > > Hashimoto's people have VERY active immune systems. Guest guest
Hi Blair, I want to quickly respond. I did a quick search and found this interesting article - by no means a complete scientific study - after reading many and a few similar writings that was enough for me to not use Echinacea to booster and support my immune system. http://www.jabfm.org/cgi/reprint/15/5/417.pdf I used Moducare from 2001 to 2006. I think it helped keep me to be able to verily function until I found my gluten problems. After I stopped eating gluten I didn't feel I needed it, so have not taken it since 8/06. I haven't had a cold either so that tells me I was right. I do still have days when I feel sluggish or my joints ache really badly though. And can tell when I mistakenly have eaten gluten as I get terrible achey joints, swelling, and stomach cramps etc. But, for the most part I am so much better than I was from 2000- 2006. I still support my adrenals and I am also working on optimizing my yonky female hormones. HTH, Bj > > > > > > > > > > Hashimoto's people have VERY active immune systems. Guest guest
, I used it and was able to somewhat function from six years. But my root problem was/is gluten. I don't use it any more, but I do give it to my Graves/Hashi daughter and it really seems to make a difference for her along with Omega3. Guest guest
Also---- , I know several thyroiders who started out with Graves' hyper swings and they swear by it. My daughter's Graves and Hashi ab's have improved, but can't verify it was from the Moducare – but am pretty sure it was a positive contributor though. Guest guest
After speaking with some members of the About.com Thyroid support forum, I'm growing a little wary to begin taking Moducare. I hear that despite it being sold over the counter, it is a VERY potent hormone that should definitely be taken WITH CLOSE DOCTOR MONITORING-- as one should look to have when taking hydrocortisone. ?? > > > > > > > > > > > > Hashimoto's people have VERY active immune systems. Guest guest
First of all ----Moducare is not (NOT) a VERY potent hormone---- Sterols are a large " subgroup " of steriods. They are not close to being even steriod hormones. HC is not a hormone either, it is a steriod medication and can be used to support the adrenals glands. A high-quality multivitamin and mineral supplement (especially B6, B12, folate, pantothenic acid, C, zinc, selenium, chromium, and manganese) can be an important starting point for the immune system. Some are available with thymus extracts in them. Please don't start Moducare of anything else for that matter without reseaching and discussing it with a knowledgeable doctor?? In an ideal world - there would be competent doctors who know how to treat us. The TSH Gods are crazy. Good luck in finding a doctor that knows anything about adrenals much less how to treat them. There are a few. It took me over six years to find one. People from FL come all the way to WA state to see him. Like I said good luck. Ideally, it is best to have competent help. But do you just wilt up and die waiting or do you research, learn and advocate for yourself? My doctor said Moducare was a good choice as it helps decrease inflammation - gluten sensitivity can cause considerable inflammation as well as Hashi's. Don't just go out and buy Moducare because I suggested it. Go out and research, ask others, talk to your doctor if you trust her/him. I never take the opinion of one person - especially via the internet. And I " always " check out what others say for myself. Everyone has opinions - that's just part of the human nature. Bottom line we all have to take responsibility for our own health and hopefully make good decisons with scientific information and valid experiences of others. Not just the word or opinon of a stranger. I know Hashi's can affect how we think and we can gasp at straws to be better (been there done that and learned from it) - so please be cautious. Not everyone can afford it, it's rather expensive. One would need to be consistent in taking it and totally committed. Expect the side effect of improved cholesterol. And in my case Moducare was a good alternative as I couldn't find a doc who knew how to treat Adrenal Fatigue and in my fozzy state back then I was sure I would get in real trouble treating on my own. Good luck, Bj > > After speaking with some members of the About.com Thyroid support > forum, I'm growing a little wary to begin taking Moducare.
