Guest guest
Hi all, I'm new to the list b/c my doc recently advised us to give 4.5yo DS Miralax. I feel pretty uneasy about giving my kids any drug, so I started investigating. DS does seem to be lactose intolelrant & we have struggled with keeping his poop 'normal' for his whole life. If we didn't watch the fiber closely enough, he was constipated & if he ate something he was sensitive to, he got runny. I've been told by our cranial sacrial therapist that it could all have been caused by the cord being wrapped around his neck at birth...who knows. We've been struggling with potty training for about a year now & he's pretty much decided that he won't push - he'll just wait for it to comeout. Sometimes I'm really not sure if he's withholding or not holding at all. We get lots of small poops every day - but now that we have the fiber routine down, they're always soft (not constipated or leaking - which we have experienced in the past). Anyway...here's the plan...he's already on Nordic Naturals cod liver & nordic berries (multi vit) along with a probiotic. He also gets benefiber on days when we're a bit lacking in the fiber department. It all seems to be working to keep his poop soft and 'pushable'. Since he's not pushing (he won't really say why - I'm just guessing he's afraid it's going to hurt), we need something to stimulate bowel movements for awhile so he can see that it won't hurt. Here's where I need the help...do I use acacia fiber, smooth move tea, or kids calm magnesium? I've also tried using gluten free products & I can't get him to eat any of them. I'm open to suggestions on tasty gluten free products; at the moment I'm just trying to keep the grains to a minimum unless they have a high fiber content. Thanks for any advice/help! Guest guest
In general, I would say that I'd go with magnesium and maybe some extra vitamin C. I've never used smooth move tea, but have used some senna for my son when he needs a little extra something. As for gluten-free products - some can be fairly expensive and we only buy certain things and usually consider them as special treats. If one approaches GF diet from the perspective of needing to 'replace' the gluten-containing products with an equivalent - I think it can be disappointing. If one approaches from the standpoint of just eliminating gluten without expectation of finding exact replacements, it may work out better. We actually just went without those gluten things for a few weeks because I just wasn't sure if we *needed* to be gluten-free so I didn't rush out to buy the GF stuff, just went with extra fruits, veggies, rice, potatoes, and meats - stuff that we already had around the house & were used to eating. When I realized that indeed we needed to be gluten-free, I approached as just adding a new dimension. For the cereals - which can be expensive and are a 'treat' in our house - my kids love Koala Crisp, Erewhon Rice Crisp, Barbara's Honey Rice Puffins. They also loved the Peanut Butter Panda Puffs (but we can't do corn anymore, so we don't get those anymore - but they're pretty reasonably priced at Trader Joe's). We like the PerkyO's - apple cinnamon flavor. GF Trader Joe's products my kids like: peanut butter cookie dough (frozen) - it's great, but has eggs so we can't have it right now frozen waffles (esp. if baked per instructions... Interesting note, the ingredients vary per region - we went to St. Louis and their TJ's frozen waffles had soy flour in them, but here in the LA area, they do not...) freeze dried fruits and regular dried fruits, organic fruit strips marshmallows (they're BIG squares & great!) Sharon's sorbets - my kids love this as an ice cream alternative GF brownie mix (though I recently found it to be very easy & even more tasty to make GF brownies from 'scratch'. . . ) Other snacks/treats (some have ingredients like corn & egg, that we currently can't have - but we had tried these before eliminating corn & egg & I can say that I enjoyed them all!): The Glutino and EnerG Foods pretzels are very good and, to me, were just as good as any other pretzel. (they're pricey, too, though). Coconut Bliss ice cream - the vanilla flavor is fabulous, as is the chocolate mint. They're expensive & a very special treat. I'm still planning to dabble in making my own ice cream using coconut milk! We love the KinniCritters animal cookies. (also a bit pricey, but crunchy, sweet & yummy!) Pamela's chocolate chunk cookies are very good too. & Sons Rice Crackers in the vegetable flavor - my son seems to think these are like daddy's " spicy chips " (e.g., Dorito-like chips). Also we like the plain rice crackers (Edw. & Sons or Sesmark) - great for making little cracker sandwiches (e.g., with peanut or sunflower butter) and for dipping in hummus or salsa, etc. In general, baking with GF flours, at least for me, has turned out to be quite easy & successful. I've just been using my Grandmother's good old Betty Crocker cook book and using superfine rice flour with some xanthan gum instead of the wheat flour. (I also do my GF baking without dairy or eggs - and it's still very good - not just by my kids' & my standards but by non-GF friends/family, too). I haven't tried baking our own bread - but to be honest we don't miss it much, but there are some intriguing recipes out there & if the photos/descriptions are true then they'd be pretty good, also! HTH....... p.s. - A 'craving' to have those gluten things (or any other particular food) can be a good indication that it is a problem food. . ..My sons were bread addicts (as was I, now that I look back) - my youngest would track my sandwich with his eyes (when he was 6-9months or so old) - I would offer any of the items off the sandwich (turkey, tomato, lettuce, etc.) and he'd bat away/decline every little thing EXCEPT the bread. Anything that we ate - it was always the bread or wheat ingredient that he devoured first and would sign for more before eating anything else on his plate. My oldest was a pasta and graham cracker junkie. I was a bagel and cream cheese junkie - and a pizza junkie. > > > Subject: Advice on my plan? > To: miralax > Date: Sunday, November 9, 2008, 9:16 AM > > > > > > > > > Hi all, > > I'm new to the list b/c my doc recently advised us to give 4.5yo DS Miralax. Guest guest
Thanks, --we haven't gone gluten-free (yet?) but are avoiding it as much as possible, kind of treating it as a controlled substance, so I too really appreciate all the ideas you've listed... I also really recommend taking a look at vegetarian/vegan and raw vegan cuisine, much of which is gluten-free. For example, my veg daughter loves lentil soup, and baked beans. You can get a lot of nutrients out of salads, vegetable soups, and stir fries too. There's a great raw vegan pumpkin pie recipe (I've lost mine or I would post it; I need to do a Google search and find it again) that uses coconut milk and nuts along with pumpkin and spices to make a chilled pie...it's delicious, can be GF depending on what you do about the pie crust, and fairly nutritious as well. Guest guest
OHH! yes, yes! please let us know if you relocate that pumpkin pie recipe - my older son has been asking about pumpkin pie (we've been making GF/CF/EF/etc-F pumpkin bread & pancakes, but I keep struggling to think about the pumpkin pie idea!! with the holidays coming up, I'd love to be armed with a pumpkin pie recipe!!) I think raw foods are very important & appreciate your having brought it up a while ago. Our meals are very often full of raw veggies and fruits - though I know when Grandpa's here in a few weeks, he'll wonder why we are eating raw veggies with supper instead of cooked!! Any tips/hints/suggestions/book recommendations on raw diets (esp. protein sources that aren't soy.. - can you do 'raw' beans?..rice??..) would be very appreciated - I keep thinking I need to work more on this! thanks! > > > > > > From: Dehnke <moonie_baby_gear@> > > > Subject: Advice on my plan? > > > To: miralax <miralax%40yahoogroups.com> > > > Date: Sunday, November 9, 2008, 9:16 AM > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > Hi all, > > > > > > I'm new to the list b/c my doc recently advised us to give 4.5yo DS > > Miralax. Guest guest
Thanks for all the GF ideas - I've been hesitant to fully embrace it, but I'm feeling more confident =) My mom is really into the raw food - she does a lot with sprouting beans. Guest guest
Hi ,I will find the pumpkin pie recipe eventually...it has to be somewhere!I am relaxing a little on the raw foods as it's so hard to do it especially at this time of the year. So I have added back in veg soups and stir fries...but still do a lot of salads and smoothies. I still really like zucchini as a substitute for pasta, with tomato sauce...and I find avocado on top of the zucchini " pasta " and tomato sauce works perfectly as a cheese substitute. Tastes even better (and I used to be a serious cheese junkie). Nuts are a good raw food protein but they are also high in oxalates. Raw almond butter is really delicious in a smoothie with frozen bananas and raw carob powder and almond milk (produces a peanut butter/chocolate shake). Bean sprouts are another good protein source. And actually fruits and vegetables are good protein sources if you eat enough of them...spinach and kale are high in protein (though personally I have to avoid them at the moment because of a borderline hypothyroid problem)...almond milk has a little protein...I think beans pretty much have to be cooked, but, why not cook them? If you Google on raw vegan you'll find all kinds of resources but here are a few: http://www.living-foods.com/recipes/http://www.thegardendiet.com/ http://thesunnyrawkitchen.blogspot.com/index.htmlhttp://rawkinradio.com/Maybe that will get you started.... Guest guest
Once you try different brands and figure out what works for you, check out amazon.com for GF food deals. I buy my son's bread mix there and set it up for autoship - it ends up costing almost 1/2 of what it would be at Whole Foods, etc. > > > > > > > > From: Dehnke <moonie_baby_ gear@> > > > > Subject: Advice on my plan? > > > > To: miralax@yahoogroups .com <miralax%40yahoogro ups..com> > > > > Date: Sunday, November 9, 2008, 9:16 AM > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > Hi all, > > > > > > > > I'm new to the list b/c my doc recently advised us to give 4.5yo DS > > > Miralax.
