Guest guest
Hi—I just read the side effects and water retention and edema are not listed on my synthroid warnings—would there be different warnings in different states? I definitely had a ton of water retention. Joan, why do you think the T4 in armour doesn't cause you to retain water? Is it just that armour also has T3? sol joan wrote: > Hi, synthroid can cause water retention. Read the packet. Guest guest
I am speechless—I have run of the mill bloating—nothing like what you experienced. What an ordeal you went through! I am so curious about this gluten connection. I have a very limited diet—and am used to eating from a small list of foods. I don’t see “gluten” written on labels but I am sure there are other names. Do you know of a source where I could learn more about this? When I did a search of Hashimoto’s on google there was a lot of info but no national organization—like the MS society. Is there one? It seems like an awful lot of people have this problem and doctors seem unable to treat it. I guess I have a lot of reading to catch up on! It been busy here in the last few days. I haven't had nor taken the time to read through this entire thread. I'll tell you my story. Some people think that edema in thyroid patients is Myxedema. It very well could be. I had it before I went into a Myxedema coma in 2004. However, the swelling while taking T4 alone wasn't the same as I experienced with Myxedema and Myxedema coma. I also didn't see edema listed as a side effect of $ynthroid or Levoxyl (another synthetic T4 med) warnings. These drugs fall under the FDA and would likely have only one label no matter what state it's shipped to. However, angioedema is the swelling under the skin and is considered to be an allergic reaction; and it's listed. Since I couldn't tell how strong your swelling is, so I won't speculate. I had the unbearable swelling for months. My eyes, face, hands, belly, legs, ankles, feet were one big mass of an oversized balloon ready to pop any second. I am just glad in my case it wasn't life threatening. My story, diagnosed in 2000 by my little girl's pediatrician. The rest of the doctors told me go home and take an anti-depressant my TSH was fine at 1.8. I was put on Levoxyl and started swelling and swelling. I was so sick I had to be carried from the bed to the bathroom. My ankles were so swollen I thought if my toe switched my skin would burst or pop like a balloon. What kind of awful disease caused me to get worse with treatment kept going through my groggy head. In a few months I was switched to $ynthro-crap and went from bad to worse. My DH flushed the $ynthroid on July 4, 2001 and I've never taken either since. After being off the T med my swelling disappeared almost completely within two days. I didn't get the horrible swelling on Unithroid (the only thyroid drug to never have a reason to be recalled). Eventually, I found a doc who put me on Armour, but my swelling would come and go even though it was much milder. It didn't leave me until after I started eating Gluten-free about two years ago. I conclude that I was allergic to either the binder, filler, or dye that was in both Synthroid and Levoxyl. And Gluten can cause havoc on all areas of the body. Gluten affects many thyroid patients negatively. Until I addressed the Gluten, I had no quality of life. HTH, Bj > > Hi, synthroid can cause water retention. Read the packet.
