Guest guest
Crystal. You probably are giving your body a shock by taking too much Armour. Not knowing what your labs were before the change or other info... here is what you were taking in terms of T3/t4 vs. what your on now. 100 mcg of T4 and .25 mg of Armour is = 109 mcg T4/2.25 mcg T3, ratio -98% T4 and 2% T3 2 grains of Armour is = 76 mch T4/18 mcg T3, ratio - 81% T4 and 19% T3 To convert to Armour you would need 1 grain of Armour and 44 mcg of T4 to be on an equivalent dose to what you were taking previously. Guest guest
Becky, How much armour and regular t4 would I need to take if I wanted to equal 100 mcg of levoxyl. Thanks for your help. This armour I think is stressing me out way to much, have not stopped sweating. Pulse hangs around 90, TONS of water weight gain. Guest guest
Hi Crystal, How much Armour and/or T4 are you currently taking? 100 mcg of Levoxyl - or any T4 only drug - is equivalent to 1 grain of Armour. Instead of getting 100% T4, you will now be getting 81% T4 and 19% T3, which is much higher than the human body makes. Some people convert the T4 into T3 fine and become hyper or have bad reaction to Armour. Others need extra T4. People like me that have conversion issues do good on Armour alone. We are not one-size-fits-all. You need to find what works for you. Good luck, Bj > > > > Hi, > > > > Been periodically writing, switched from levoxyl 100 mcg and 1/4 60 > mg armour tab to 2 tabs of armour. Guest guest
Hi Becky,I dont think I do well on Armour alone. I was on 100 mcg of levoxyl and 1/4 60 mg of armour and It was too much, so I had gone down to 100 mcg of levoxyl. I convert fine by the way, my results all on the high end. I wanted to try just armour to see if my remaining issues would go away, hair still coming out alot , period problems etc. I move to armour starting at 1 grain a day, cycled up 1 time a week to 2 grains a day, which was too much, pulse was over 90 resting, and much worse even moving around. I went down to 1 1/2 grain. Pulse is better around 80 something resting, but quickly higher when moving around, also gained excessive amounts of water weight since starting armour, like 9 lbs. Peeing alot at night, and sweating all day. Temps have been good around 98 degrees all day. Also the palps(you know going along fine then heart slows down, speeds back up) anyway these are my issues right now. Why am I gaining weight so fast on the armour. I mean this literally happened overnight with each raise. I was thinking of just doing a combination of both because I like my energy, and no hair loss on the armour. I was trying to figure out how to equal 100 mcg of levoxyl, while doing both armour and levoxyl.thankscrystalSubject: Re: armour-weight gain , increased sweatingTo: Thyroiditis Date: Wednesday, July 2, 2008, 12:27 PM Hi Crystal, How much Armour and/or T4 are you currently taking? 100 mcg of Levoxyl - or any T4 only drug - is equivalent to 1 grain of Armour. Guest guest
Hi Crystal, If you were doing ok on Levoxyl why did you want to change to Armour? I must have missed that part. How long were you on the 100 mcg of Levoxyl and the .25 grain or 15 mg of Armour? If it wasn't 4-6 to six weeks you don't know if it helped or not. Some folks want the T3 benefit and can only tolerate taking Armour every other day or so. If I understand correctly, your increased from 100 mcg of Levoxyl and 15 mg Armour to 120 mg (2 grains) of Armour all within a week's time. That would be like going from 125 mcg of T4 to 200 mcg of T4. If that is what you did that was very dangerous. I am glad you are okay. BTW, you would have also had bad affects from increasing T4 that quickly too. Increases must be done very slow and steady. Our bodies do not become hypO in a week's time. It takes months even years. You can't expect to become un-hypo that quickly either. This has to be done slowly but steadly. A 1/4 grain to 1/2 grain of Armour - or - 12 to 25 mcg of T4 every 4-6 weeks at the max. You did this all within a week - Count your blessings! Low Adrenals can affect increases in a T meds as well. I do understand the urgency to be back to normal again quickly, but patience is required if you want to get there in one piece. Have you checked your iron, vitamin B-12, vitamin D levels? Do you eat unprocessed foods, eat small amounts and often, and eat a good balance of protein, fats, carbs and fiber? Limit goitrogen foods if they bother you. Drink lots of water. Stay away from flouride, artifical sweetners and other dangerous toxins that can badly affect thyroid function. You mentioned that you have high levels of T3. If T3 is too high it can negatively affect cortisol. Guest guest
Hi, I wanted to try armour because of the hype Also because I still was unable to lose weight and was still losing hair on the levoxyl. I didnt change in only a week. I was on the 100 levoxyl and 1/4 armour. The next day I changed to 1 grain of armour-with the 1/4. Then a week later I moved up to 1 and 1/2 and a week after that I moved up a 1/2 a grain, and moved back down. I have been on the armour for since about the first or second sunday in june. Thanks Crystal Subject: Re: armour-weight gain , increased sweatingTo: Thyroiditis Date: Wednesday, July 2, 2008, 2:28 PM Hi Crystal,If you were doing ok on Levoxyl why did you want to change to Armour? Guest guest
Hi Crystal, You didn't mention where exactly your labs are at, so the two things you did mention are weight-loss and hair-loss. Maybe this will help. Keep in mind that you may never be like you used to be, but you can get back good qulaity of life with some changes. Hair loss can be from a number of things including thyroid disease. My hair loss became less and less with optimizing my thyroid and iron levels, taking extra iodine (which is controversial for Hashi patients) and eating a good non-processed food diet. I am hypO and hair loss was one of my symptoms, it was so much worse when I was over medicated. Did it get worse for you on the 2 grains of Armour? It seems to be worse for HypEr people with Graves Disease. Low iodine, deficiency in iron, inadequate protein intake can cause hair loss. Fever, certain medications - drugs for the heart/blood thinners, meds for gout, arthritis, acne, or psoriasis -; cancer treatments, birth control pills, fungal infections, and others can also are known for hair loss. Supplementing with extra biotin, boron, silica, and cysteine somewhat helped, but the four things mentioned above changed everything for me. Weight-loss is problematic for many Hashi people, including myself until I found a doc who dug into the root cause. I have Gluten Intolerance. That in itself took over five years to be diagnosed; in the meantime I kept gaining pounds. By eating a non-processed (processed foods are full of bad soy), non-gluten diet and balancing my protein, fat, carbs and fiber I lost over 100 pounds. The trick for me is to eat small frequent meals, drink plenty of water, and exercise sensibly. This was a life-changing challenge - one that did not happen over night and took lots of effort on my part to conquer. We do as we know, meaning I cooked and did what I knew, what my mother cooked and what I ate as a child. I continued it into adult life as that's all I knew. Even my DH came from the mid-west and expected meat, potatoes and dessert every night. We ate lots of processed foods/carbs. To change a life-long life-style was mind altering; I had to completely change my way of thinking about food and I did it back in 2005. It wasn't easy and I had gobs of stumbles along the way. I went from a size 22W to a 10. I am 44 and feel better now than I did ten years or so ago. I start regaining weight if I don't eat frequently or get lax on exercising, as my body thinks it's being starved, therefore stores fat instead of burning it. Also, I learned that when I exercise, which is walking and weight training as I have bad knees from a skiing accident. I must stay in my fat burning zone or I burn muscle instead of fat and feel worse. I think some people mistakenly think they have Adrenal burnout when they exercise too vigorously. They could actually be burning muscle, which is not good and makes them feel so poorly. Three years ago when I started, I could only set the treadmill on .5 or the lowest setting to stay in my fat burning zone. See: http://www.seekwellness.com/fitness/fat_max_zone.htm for how to calculate your fat burning zone heart rate. It would take 45 minutes to walk a mile and I would be exhausted. I persevered! Today I set it on 3.5 and can walk a mile in 13 minutes. I look at pictures and don't recognize myself, yet still remember all the horrible feeling along the way. Guest guest
Wow, You are an inspiration and sound alot like me. Do you mind if I asked how you balanced your carbs? I CANNOT seem to lose any weight unless I lower my carb intake. I would love to get an idea on how to do that for me and eat the level of carbs that is right for me. As for the gluten intolerance, I have often thought of that, but have not delved into it. Do you mind sending me a sample of what you eat a day. I tried iodine and it made me much worse. Not sure if it is right for me at this time. I believe iron I have to have my ferritin checked right? Because my regular iron levels are all fine. Thanks so much for the information Crystal Subject: Re: armour-weight gain , increased sweatingTo: Thyroiditis Date: Wednesday, July 2, 2008, 5:46 PM Hi Crystal, You didn't mention where exactly your labs are at, so the two things you did mention are weight-loss and hair-loss. Guest guest
Hi Crystal, Thanks for the kind words. Did your doc run a complete iron panel with CBC? Ferritin is storage iron. Lots of Thyroid people on the web push ferritin as the best test. But there are lots of Thyroid people with iron overload that need a low ferritin level. I think it's wise to get a ferritin ran with an iron panel and CBC to see the entire picture. I think the reason people push the ferritin test is that some believe that a low ferritin will show up before low hemoglobin and iron. My bio-chemist doc says that isn't so; and he orders all of the tests mentioned above. I do struggle with keeping my iron level up though. My doc says to take iron with: vitamin C, copper, manganese, molybdenum, vitamin A and B complex. They are also needed for complete iron absorption. Avoid using excessive amounts of zinc and vitamin E, which can interfere with iron absorption or take these hours away from iron. I use Ferrochel (ferrous bisglycinate chelate), an amino acid chelated iron as it absorbs good and I don't have any of the stomach problems like with other forms. Celiac Disease is hereditary and affects 1 in 300. Gluten Intolerance affects 1 in 7 people worldwide. Gluten is a protein that is very hard for the body to digest. The more I learn about gluten the more I am convinced that gluten, like the proteins in cow's milk was never meant for the human digestive tract. I had numerous Gluten blood and antibody tests. In fact, various docs ran the tests three times and all were negative. I wasted years with going from doctor to doctor and getting no remedy. I wish I had had a competent doctor that said, "Look you can't eat Gluten", but instead doc after doc ran expensive tests and said "No" you don't have it - either you have Celiacs or you don't. Most traditional doctors don't know that there is a "section" in between. Just having Hashi makes you a high risk for Gluten Intolerance or Celiacs, and vitamin B-12 deficiency. See these two articles that explain the differences… http://ezinearticles.com/?Diagnosing-Celiac-Disease-and-Gluten-Sensitivity & id=239028 http://www.foodintol.com/celiac.asp http://digestive.niddk.nih.gov/ddiseases/pubs/celiac/ Since I no longer eat gluten (wheat) that pretty much limits bread, donuts, cake, pasta etc. I still eat pasta made from organic brown rice flour a couple times a month, as my kids love spaghetti – one of very few processed foods I buy. The terminology "carb" may mean something differ to you than it does me. I think of carbs as processed foods containing flour. Veggies are technically complex-carbs, but I think of them as veggies and not carbs per say. Here are my last 2-3 days of meals: I won't list all the water I drank as I always have a glass handy and I take it wherever I go. I don't drink pop, mostly water and 1-2 cups of rooibos tea. ü Breakfast: 1) ½ c. oatmeal with cinnamon & applesauce (I don't like milk so don't use it) and raisins, rooibos tea; 2) 2 egg omelet with tomatoes and blueberries, rooibos tea ü Snack: 1) ½ c. pumpkin seeds & an apple; 2) 2 c. smoothie- grapes, peaches, strawberries w/ Stevia and brown rice protein ü Lunch: 1 salad-½ c. organic tuna, tomatoes, hard boiled egg, w/ olive oil & vinegar); 2) salad- ½ c. skinless organic chicken, carrots, beets, peas, w/olive oil & vinegar ü Snack: 1) 2 c. organic sodium-free popcorn; 2) ½ banana & ½ c. snow peas ü Dinner: 1) 4 oz of meatloaf w/organic tomato juice, egg, oatmeal; ¾ c. green beans, salad- baby spinach & a pear; 2) 2 3" baked salmon steaks, 1 c. of squash, salad- baby spinach & a peach ü Snack: 1) 6 walnuts & celery; 2) 2 c. smoothie that I made earlier It has become a habit, so I bake up and freeze food, mainly protein ahead of time. I make sure we always have food available or the kids want anything handy, junk food. I don't really have junk food other than organic chips and popcorn. Eating gluten-free is an inconvenience to some people, but it has become natural for me now. Anything worth having takes effort, so my effort has been transformed to making healthier meals and always having veggies and fruit ready for all of us. It does take planning though. Also, some of the foods I eat are considered goitrogens, so you may want to avoid them. I have Hashis, but no growths, goiter, nodules, zilch and most goitrogens do not bother me except soy and millet. The veggies lose their goitrogenic state by steaming them. Strawberries, peaches, walnuts, almonds etc don't affect me either. I think there is a list of goitrogenic foods in the file section of the groups homepage. If not, I have a list. Guest guest
Amazing how different diets can be, what one can tolerate another can't. I'm not saying I NEVER EVER eat as much sugar as you do, but when I do even eat a fraction of your intake, I suffer for it. I do best when I get my sugar from extra proteins, much slower blood sugar hit than fruit or high carb veggies. I also need a LOT of fat in my diet to further slow the sugar metabolism of any carbs I do eat, and to ameliorate/slow any sugars the proteins are digested into. sol beckyjov wrote: > > Here are my last 2-3 days of meals: I won't list all the water I > drank as I always have a glass handy and I take it wherever I go. Guest guest
Hi Sol, I don't get this much fruit in the winter as it's not available then. Or raw veggies either. Like I said I don't consider veggies carbs, but complex carbs and eat them often for fiber. Also eat wild rice for fiber. I can eat more of these foods - fyuits and veggies - in the summer as I am more active in the summer than in the winter. Unprocessed fruits and veggies with or without natural sugar has never affected me badly unless I eat too much of them at a setting :-). We eat lots of organic turkey and chicken with salad. I still eat red meat twice a week to keep my B-12 level up. I do find that fat from fish and avacados etc plus virgin coconut oil is helpful to me, especially for my brain and well being. I forgot to mention that I usually eat about a tablespoon of VCO (virgin coconut oil) three times a day as well. Yep - straight out of the jar. How do you get your antioxidants' intake? By supplements? What do you eat? Happy 4th of July! Everyone!
