Your experience convinces me that there seems to be a connection between

female hormones and the thyroid. I know that my problems began when I was

peri--menopausal and many women have thyroid problems after giving birth. I

just wish I understood how all this works. But then, since men do sometimes

get Graves or HyperT, it has to be more than female hormones at work.

Inderal, a beta blocker has no affect on Graves or the thyroid. It simply

deals with the rapid heart rate/pulse. The medications that will eliminate

your symptoms are Tapazol or PTU..or you may want to try 's supplement

list.

Hi : Being a guy I can't really comment on the PMS thing, but anyway. I've

been living with Grave's for roughly 10 years, keeping things under control

using

herbs and tai chi practice. I find when I don't do my tai chi regularly my body

reminds me in no uncertain terms. I sometimes get chest pains or twinges if I'm

not

working out regularly.

I haven't had any thyroid tests done in over a year, but I find that my pulse

and

things can vary quite a bit over time. I've been doing a lot of physical work

for

the past few weeks (finishing our new home) and I've lost about 30 lb and my

pulse

is often elevated. Being a workaholic by nature, it's often difficult for me to

remember to take a break, eat, etc. Stress tends to bring it up as well. There

are

periods where my pulse will drop to below 80, and sometimes when it zooms up

over

100. Comes and goes.

Me.

I've been seeking a similar answer, except that I've not been properly

diagnosed as " hyperthyroid. " Since September I've had a racing pulse

(was constant 120 and as high as 138 some nights when I would wake up

in the middle of the night), sweating palms, unexplanable anxiety,

sleeplessness, etc. My mother has Graves and had similar symptoms to

mine, but my free T4 and free T3 tests are normal. My TSH was .9 in

early Septempber; I've been retested every 4 weeks or so since; 4 weeks

ago my TSH was .53, and I was just retested last week (haven't gotten

those results yet). I was on Verapamil for a while for the rapid heart

beat, but it stopped helping after 2 weeks. I'm on Atenelol now, and

it's keeping my heart rate down (but I have asthma and it makes me

cough all the time). I still get hotter than usual, and I still have

some anxiety. Also, I don't like all the side effects of the beta

blocker--it makes me dizzy, etc. Is anyone else out there having a

similar problem? An endocrinologist tells me I'm barking up the wrong

tree, but I've been through cardiology tests (all heart tests were

normal) and to a therapist for a month now (who tells me I don't " fit "

any anxiety disorder profile, etc.) HELP!!!!

Thanks for any help or suggestions. My next Dr. appt. will be with a

neurologist (I also have extremely hyper reflexes).

I think I would find a different endocrinologist! You are describing

the same symptoms I have, except for the test levels. Graves (or

any thyroid disease) tends to be hereditary. I am on Inderal, 40mg

x4 a day. Up until now, it has worked fine, but my levels are much

worse (just tested last week) now, and I don't think it is working as well.

I see my endo next week, and I hope he has some course of treatment for

me. My tsh was less than 0.01. Can't remember what my free

T4 was-memory and concentration are gone now.......

Hi and Everyone,

In the past we looked at this phenomenon and I concluded that the

increase in hyper symptoms immediately prior to menses is the result of the

natural increase in progesterone production at this point in the cycle.

I suggested and several women found that it helped to eliminate all zinc

supplementation in the second half of the cycle while still continuing

copper. Zinc seems to help the body produce progesterone while copper seems

to help produce estrogen (although there is still some controversy and

unanswered questions about this).

Usually most women start craving chocolate, a good source of copper, a

few days before their period starts, probably because of the beginning of a

feeling of uneasiness during this hyper phase. I think the hyper phase with

its consequent irritibility occurs in healthy women and is just augmented in

those with hyperT.

While chocolate helps provide some copper, I don't think it's the best

food to eat for a copper source at this time. The sugar and other stimulants

in chocolate are negatives for those with hyperT. I would suggest eating

high copper foods like beans, crab, or lobster, and taking a copper

supplement.

  • 2 years later...

I started being plagued with a high pulse (120's resting, 149 short walk)a few

years ago. There was a whole battery of tests run only with the conclusion

there wasn't anything really wrong with me and I was put on attenolol(HBP

medicine)1 10mg tablet a day. After a few months, it dropped to the 90's to

110's and of course higher if I did any serious walking. Last July, I found a

wonderful new dr and when she looked over my records, she had a question for me.

How long had I been taking Elavil? The answer was just short of 14 years. Her

relply to that was that she was taking me off of it. One side affect was the

racing pulse.(also the extreme weight gain) Now I take 5 mg of the attenolol

and my normal pulse is now down around the low 70's. If you take Elavil, it's a

possiblity that it may be the reason for the high pulse. If you don't, make

sure they check all your medicines to be sure you are not having a side effect

from one of them. Jan in CA +/:=)

I hope each of you had a blessed Thanksgiving and for our other friends, I hope

your week was blessed also. I am wondering if anyone has had a problem with

your pulse racing??? I have been having some problems with light-headiness for

about 3 weeks now. Earlier this week, my husband was taking his blood pressure

so we also checked mine. My bp was fine, but my pulse rate was high - 120 the

first time. I kept rechecking it and my pulse never went below 100. I saw a

doctor on Wednesday and they put me through a bunch of tests - ekg, thyroid,

sugar level, hemoglobin, plus some others. Everything came back normal. Today I

had an appointment with another doctor since I haven't been able to get in to

see my regular dr. He did an x-ray of my heart which was also fine. Right now

I am on meclizine for the light-headiness. I have a follow up appointment on

Dec. 11. I have also left a message with my ra doctor, describing the problem

and asking if the plaquenil or vioxx could be causing the problem. Anyone else

experience this before??

Are you on other meds besides plaquenil? Have you had any med changes

besides doubling the plaquenil?

No, there haven't been any other med changes. That was one of the first things

they asked about. They didn't think it was the plaquenil since I have been on

this dose before and have never had any problems. However, I have a call into

my doctor to see what he thinks.

I know when mine did this, it was due to the different antidepressants

they tried me on. The EFFEXOR and REMRON were the worst. Really bad.
