Guest guest
Hello, I was diagnosed with Hashi's one year ago--been on Synthroid and Cytomel. Feeling pretty good. 3 months ago, had thyroid ultrasound which showed 2 nodules the size of raisins. Repeated ultrasound last week, and the nodules have slightly increased. My doctor is concerned about cancer, and says that a fine needle biopsy usually comes back inconclusive. He is recommending surgery to remove the nodules, and maybe the entire thyroid. Please tell me your thoughts on this. If my body believes my thyroid is foreign, is it a good idea to just remove my thyroid? It seems I will need to take Synthroid for life anyway. Thanks in advance for your comments. Regina
Guest guest
Hi Regina, are the nodules bothering you (pain, blockage)? We recently had someone else asking about surgery here. I'm no expert, but I've heard enough stories about post-surgical problems that makes me feel I want to hang onto my thyroid as long as I can breathe and swallow and have no throat pain -- unless I know there is definitely cancer. An endo who once felt a nodule on my thyroid (with his hands) said if there was no pain or blockage a scan wasn't absolutely necessary (my insurance didn't cover it). In some instances people just have to have surgery of course, but I'd personally be very cautious about the decision and get a second opinion. I'd also suggest you definitely join the Yahoo group Thyroidectomy to share your story and see what patients who've had surgery say. > > Hello, > > I was diagnosed with Hashi's one year ago--been on Synthroid and > Cytomel. Guest guest
, Thank you very much. No, the nodules do not bother me. My doctor wants to rule out cancer, and says a fine needle biopsy is almost always inconclusive. I'll look into the thyroidectomy group! ~ regina > > > > Hello, > > > > I was diagnosed with Hashi's one year ago--been on Synthroid and > > Cytomel.
