Guest guest
Hi susan, I haven't tried it. As far as I know Maca root is considered food and consuming it is as safe as eating any vegetable. However, Maca may cause goiters in people at high risk for them, much like other goitrogens - broccoli or cauliflower etc. There is no proof pro or con that Maca causes or worsens goiters though. There just are no reliable studies for Maca on humans and few very animal studies. It's a trail and error process. Some hypO people need to stay away from it or be cautious and proceed accordingly. HypEr people definitely need to steer clear of Maca; it will more than likely worsen hyperthyroidism. That said I have seen in the literature that it has many positive effects, which isn't a one-size-fits-all benefit –it just depends on each individual as to what the benefit may be – in other wards, not everyone will get the same benefit and some will only notice slight benefit. Many, but not all, hypos find quality of life some even say - life saving benefits. Some Maca root benefits include; improves libido and sexual performance, body temperature, energy level, depression, anxiety and stress. It may speed up wound healing and reduce anemia along with enhancing memory, learning, and mental ability. Aids in healthy teeth and bones and acts as an antioxidant and helps build muscle while being non-addictive. It has no known side effects when taken cautiously other than hormones (thyroid meds) may need to be lowered - assumming symptoms of too much thyroid. A friend (without thyroid disease) swears it regulated her periods, female hormones, water retention, depression, and later helped with meno symptoms and weight gain. She even told me that her sugary cravings left and only come back if she doesn't take her Maca root powder consistently now. I thought about trying it about three years ago, but my bio-chemist doc said there are no human studies on it to justify that and he didn't want me to take it because I had quite a few issues going on then that were the priority. I may just bring it back up again when I see him. Bj > > Has anyone tried maca root for regulating their thyroid, adrenals and > hormones? Guest guest
Thanks, BJ -- you're so helpful, as always. I was reading that people with a history of estrogen-related breast cancer in their family have to be careful with maca. So I'll hold off as my mom just had surgery for that this summer. I set up an appt. with an herbalist/ integrative MD for Jan... she actually accepts my insurance which is great. I'm primarily going to see her for my iron and cholesterol problems (I went off the liver, since it's so high in cholesterol and my eye doc is on my case about that now too), but I plan to ask her about maca and my adrenals as well. > > > > Has anyone tried maca root for regulating their thyroid, adrenals > and > > hormones?
