Guest guest
Hi everyone. I have been thinking lately that diabetic diets might, MIGHT be helpful in making us " ACM " ers feel a bit better. I had one doctor say in the past I was diabetic and he had me on Metformin and I avoided all sugar and junk food basically. I pretty much followed a really good diabetic diet. Since then the doctors say I am not diabetic. I know this is true as the other doctor was thrown out of the hospital with all kinds of complaints against him. I have also been tested for diabetis and there is not sign of it since then. The thing is this though. While on this diabetic diet and said medicine I improved alot with the symptoms of ACM. I felt much better. I am not sure if it was a coincidence or what but am going to see if I can go back on that medication and go back to the diabetic diet. I will let you know if it works. Let me know your thoughts on this if you think there is something to it.
Guest guest
Hmm, diabetic medication I am not sure that would be safe if you are not a diabetic (!!) however the diabetic diet is very healthy diet and may be useful in many ways for ACM, esp. as regards a healthy life style and diet as a lot of ACM suffer from increased weight gain due to our gradual reduction of activities in so many ways.Biddy.ACM1 Posterior Fossa Decompression with Duraplasty, Sub-Occipital Craniectomy, Partial C1 Laminectomy. 2006. Guest guest
Hi.. My " take " on that would be that what your are describing is basically a good, balanced diet without all the things which have been proven to be less than advantageous to anyone. <g> I have to believe that this would be very helpful to anyone...especially someone suffering with a condition like chiari. Several years ago my husband and I started following the 'South Beach Diet Plan " ... and it has helped us quite a bit. We have blood work done periodically and the #s are good.... most of the time I feel pretty good.. ( And BTW this was NOT developed by a weight loss Dr., it was developed by a cardiologist to help his patients) But some of the main components are elimination of white flour....limited sugar..low and unsaturated fats .and the selection of carbs based on the glycemic scale. It is not a LOW carb diet...it is a " good carb " diet. <g> We also take a good vitamin supplement , which can be utilized by the body. Ours is in capsule form.... It just makes good sense to me to try to do what I can to help myself with these chiari issues. It's certainly not a cure, but it helps ! Take care, Sally R... Guest guest
As a dietician I saw once said, " If everyone ate like a diabetic, we wouldn't have half of the problems that we see now in healthcare. " Enough said. A 40-30-30 diet (40% of calories from carbohydrates and 30% each from protein and fat; basically a diabetics' diet) worked really well for me for energy when I started going downhill in 1998 before my PFD. I was a serious weightlifter then and was able to control and modulate my body fat % very, very easily. It's not the easiest way to eat, but it has become a lifestyle to me after 10 years. (However, the nausea associated with my tethered cord is making this a challenge...)
