A cautionary tale for elders

My mother, 73, soon 74, is in hospital right now with impacted colon. She

came really close to serious trouble this time. Maybe she'll change her

ways...if she'll listen to me, which would be a HUGE CHANGE!

She keeps too many of the grandkids on the other side of the family and

works too hard about that. She pulled a muscle in her chest from moving a

piece of furniture to get something dropped by a 2 yr old. The pulled muscle

got so painful that it mimicked heart trouble. Went to ER, spent a night in

hospital, they gave her MORPHINE, well known to cause constipation, and

she's had bowel problems all her life. She used to be real good about taking

care of herself but now she's eating junk.

The constipation grew. She was out of her usual Milk of Magnesia and took

Dulcolax. It has the exact opposite desired effect in some people. Her colon

became 3/4 impacted.

Of all things, while they were trying to get her cleaned out, they almost

screwed up and almost gave her a Dulcolax suppository. Her husband caught it

just in time and it was changed to enemas. (Her husband is not my father but

is a very good man and tries hard to take care of her.)

She is out of the woods now, almost cleaned out after 5 days in the

hospital. They may start feeding her today and won't discharge her until

they see food go from end to end.

She got mad at me last time I was there because I told her that diet drinks

and junk food would ruin her health and she knew better. I told my brother

that and he quipped " she's 73 and can eat anything she wants to " . He's an

idiot.

And now y'all know two reasons why I maintain 160 miles between me and my

original family. The third is my father who is now a prescription drug

addict and estranged from all of us.

The poor health tales and doctor and drug stories we hear from that side of

the family serve to strongly re-inforce to my wife and children the things

that I have been telling them for years. Even my kids are starting to keep

distance from my mother, even though they do love her, because they can't

stand the pain of watching all this.
