Hi Everyone!

I just completed my master's degree final paper

titled, " Understanding an Invisible Disability; Chiari I

Malformation.

It was a qualitative study that involved 30 students ranging in age

from K-12. The conclusion includes a list of suggested accommodations

and/or modifications to help children with Chiari succeed in a school

setting. Thanks again to those of you who participated in my

project.

Hi Bridget

I just wanted to Compliment you on your study I thought it was great I

remember you getting info. and asking for suggestions but of course I can not

remember what I wrote to you of course that is because of the Chiari at least

that is my excuse.

I did always have problems with learning and being able to come up with the

words to say .

I grew up in the 60's I was born in '57 I had one brother we both played

all sports I did pretty well until age 13 I was hit very hard in the back

playing football I was taken to ER by my mom that was in 1970 of course there

were no MRI's then they said it was a " Whiplash "

Things just started going downhill from then I was mis-diagnosed from then

til 1974 I was finally sent to a NS who done many tests and could find nothing

he did one last test which found my problem and did the Chiari surgery he says

in his notes that he considered it a Chiari II surgery.

It wasn't a cure all as he said it wouldn't be but it was Definitely a

successful surgery.I have always been able to work but have always had

limitations in what I could do.The last several years have been very rough I

haven't been able to work since 2004.

I just began learning about Chiari in May of '06 I can't understand why

there is so little Awareness about Chiari.I learned everything I know about it

from the Great Chiari People on these Great Chiari Groups

Thank You for all your hard work I hope people read your Research Project it

is very Real and Very Genuine.Chiari is a Congenital problem and does effect

many children when growing up and usually there is no Awareness until things go

terribly wrong.

(Indiana)

Chiari Surgery 1974 (age 17) : Suboccipital Craniectomy :Laminectomy of C1 and

C2 : Removal of Scarred Cerebellar Tonsils wide Graft of area done with

Paraspinous Muscle Tissue. It was Also assumed I had a Syrinx but of course there

were no MRI's then so the status of the spinal cord was unknown. My Chiari was

found with a test called a " Pneumoencephalogram " it was a rough test (Not done

much anymore)

I do think this Surgery was very successful and Definately Neccessary
