One of the biggest helps to me was finding a pillow that kept my neck from bending while I slept. For a long while, I used a very thin pillow. Later I got a pillow with a channel for my head. Another thing that's helpful with throat is drinking warm water to release the throat muscles. It keeps me from feeling as though I'm choking.
