Guest guest
Hi Everyone! Has anyone been battling with muscle spasms and charley horses? My spasms are in my back and the charley hoses are in my legs. I had previous Cervical, Chiari, and Low Lumbar surgeries. My blood is tested often due to thyroid and a Mast T Cell disease and there is no low levels of potassium. I take vitamins, vit.c, and 1200 mg of Calcium with D daily. Need relief! Guest guest
Hi all, Please excuse my ignorance, but what are " Charley Horses " ?? I understand the odd spasms, not sure why I am having them and would soooo love to know and understand this more, as no one can / willingly give me a reason for them!! It is very odd, it is either in my arm (s), shoulder, leg (s) and some time the whole body ( from the neck) just 'jumps' but this is ONLY when I am in bed trying to sleep. Hope to get some replies via CCI as I am sure I am not the only one who is not familiar with the term " Charley Horses " and maybe why, I ( we ) as other ACMer's have this same experience as I do of this strange instantaneous movement of our limbs with NO warning and only lasting a split of a second.......but can happen several times a night!!! regards to all, Biddy. Guest guest
Charlie Horses are common for anyone, Chiari or no, to experience. I had them terribly when I was pregnant and learned I could avoid them by remembering to stretch my legs " heels first " ...if I stretched them toes first, I would have instantaneous Charlie Horses, an incredibly and intensely painful spasm in the calves of the legs. We all know what they feel like and there are no words to describe! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charlie_horse In people who do not have Central Nervous System disorders, charlie horses can be a symptom of low potassium and dehydration. Now, for those of us with CNS disorders, we have charlie horses or leg spasms that come without the stretching of the legs. I believe these can also be related often to Tethered Cord. Since I've been detethered, I don't have the actual intense spasms, but my calves do feel " on the verge " of charlie horses much of the time. A strong burning is what I feel. I imagine an anti-spasm med like Flexeril could help if a pt. gets spasms too often and with too much intensity. You might talk to your doctor is the spasms are too frequent and too much to bear. The muscle jerks are called myoclonus and also are very common when you are in bed and have finally relaxed, right before sleep. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Myoclonus I get them in my diaphragm, my abdomen, and my legs and arms and sometimes, whole body jerks. I hope this helps a little. And that you all have a beautiful weekend. Guest guest
These types of muscle spasm were a very bothersome problem for me before my TC surgery. I would get muscle spasms in my low back these then traveled down my leg and became a very uncomfortable " Charley Horse " or leg cramp. I'd get these all the time! I would carry " Icey Hot " or other muscle rub to put on the cramp. Since TC surgery I've had 2 maybe 3 leg cramps. They've been so few I really can't remember when I had my last one. That's one symptom I'm so glad to be rid of. Hope you all are having a pain free night.
