Any ideas welcome please.

I have a Px of approx 8 months standing with persistent UTI leading to 5

courses of IV antibiotics early this year, multiple oral Abs and now

sporadic Abs but on Hiprax to keep urine acidic which helps to some extent.

Sx include fever, pain, cloudy, foul smelling urine and spasms. Px is

female, 30's, paraplegic for 5 years post spinal haemorrhage which causes

generalised muscular spasms. She has a urethral catheter which also has

helped alleviate UTI to some extent. She will possibly have a suprapubic

catheter inserted in Feb2001 to give the urethra a rest. Much emotional

issues re situation but working through these positively with professional

help. Almost completely vegan diet, drinks masses of fluids (water, herbal

teas). 21 day menstrual cycle with heavy, painful bleeding. Tendency to

constipation.

Herbs used to date in tea and tincture form:- Atropha, Hypericum, Barosma,

Zea mays, Parietaria, Gingko, Achillea, Calendula 25%, Hydrastis, Althea

rad, Alchemilla vulg., Chelidonium, Agropyron, Piper methysticum, Echinacea,

Glycirrhiza, Chamomilla

This is not all of them but I haven't got the notes to hand. We did try a

douche applied via the catheter at one point but this was very difficult to

do.

The herbs have helped a great deal but she still needs to resort to Abs

every so often and the urine is never completely clear from sediment. Is it

realistic to expect this to resolve further/fully?

Dear e,

Cranberry juice, preferably not too sweet, can help to prevent bacterial

adhesion to bladder wall. About a litre daily. Or tablets.

Arctostaphylos uva-ursi is useful for Paraplegic cystitis - make a cold

infusions to avoid excessive tannins. Better with an alkaline urine, so may

need to add a pinch of bicarbonate to the tea. This might clash with the

acidifying effect of cranberry juice ? so can't take at same time of day.

Avoid prolonged use without a break: two weeks max.at a time. Try one week

on and ten days off to clear a build up of bugs?

I have a recipe for Uva ursi cold-infused in cold chamomile tea.
