The leaves may also be seen as hands or arms cradling a small red energy ball, representing hope, healing, and new life. What is Qigong? " Qigong (pronounced " chee-gong " ) is one of the cornerstones of traditional Chinese medicine. " Qi " is the universal energy that makes up and flows through everything in the universe. In our bodies, it is vitality or life force. " Gong " means to practice, cultivate, or refine, leading to mastery. " Qigong, " then, means to cultivate or refine one's vitality or life force through practice. Spring Forest helps in this endeavor by offering a number of classes, workshops, and retreats. We also schedule individual, telephone, and distance sessions through our Center in Eden Prairie, Minnesota. The Spring Forest Vision Our vision is " a healer in every family and a world without pain. " To help take this vision to the next level, Spring Forest Qigong is making some exciting additions to our programs, including preparation for active exercise classes at the Spring Forest Center and a program to train Spring Forest Qigong teachers. Master Lin and everyone at the SFQ Center sends love and light to all our friends around the world! May your 2008 be filled with happiness. Update on the New SFQ Changes We have been moving forward with construction at the SFQ Center and would like to update you about changes that have taken place: As you may know, the appointment procedure has recently changed. Check-in is at the same location; however, that area will now be utilized only for payment and meditation, creating a more peaceful pre-session environment. Check-out will be across the hall, where you can schedule future appointments and ask any questions you may have. Also, the new store is now open, stocked with SFQ books, CDs, and other merchandise (also still available at our website). We hope these changes will create a more pleasant experience for you at the SFQ Center. Thank you for your patience with our transition! Early Alert! Here's something for that shiny new 2008 calendar: the Spring Forest Qigong Annual International Conference will be held April 17-20 at the Sheraton Bloomington Hotel in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Information will be available soon in upcoming newsletters and on the SFQ website. _______________________________________________ Healing Meditation for Cancer Patients and Those Who Love Them Master Lin says of this new CD, which made its debut recently at the Spring Forest Women's Health Conference: " As you know, pure, unconditional, universal love is at the heart of everything I teach and believe in so deeply. This love is the most powerful healing force in the universe, and it lives within all of us. Even if we don't always feel it or see it in ourselves or in others, this love is always there within us and always available to us without limit. This message is about channeling unconditional love for a specific purpose: healing from cancer. Cancer is a word that creates such fear in many people, and fear is a powerful emotion. It can be positive if it alerts us and spurs us forward to quickly find safety or assistance, but fear can be very damaging if we hold on to it very long. Love transforms the energy of fear into something positive and healing. That is one of the reasons pure, unconditional love can be so powerful in helping to heal from cancer-- which is why I created a special healing meditation for cancer patients and those who love them. This guided meditation assists you in awakening, enhancing, and focusing the limitless healing power of unconditional love to transform cancer energy, releasing it from the body and changing it into something beautiful and healing. This is a meditation you can utilize for yourself or for someone you love who is dealing with cancer. Remember that the more healing love energy you send to others, the more healing love energy you will receive. " The Healing Meditation for Cancer Patients and Those Who Love Them is now available through the SFQ website. ____________________________________________________________________ Ask Master Lin Do you have something you would like to ask Master Lin? Each month we will select a question that has been sent to us and publish the answer in this newsletter (your name will not be used). Please keep in mind that Master Lin does not diagnose medical conditions and will not be able to personally answer each question. If you would like a member of our support team to get back to you, please make note of that in your email or letter. Send questions to newsletter@.... This month's question: Master Lin, what do you consider the biggest barrier for " the Western mind " ? What can we do to overcome that barrier and be better qigong practitioners? Answer: " The biggest barrier is analyzing things too much. This puts too much focus on the material part of the world. For the spiritual world, you need to use your feelings--use your heart energy. Notice the moment that your body, mind, and heart are all together doing something. Just feel what is happening. If you analyze, you may not get a good answer. The second biggest barrier is impatience. Be patient! You are living a busy life and want things to happen quickly, but you need to meditate and practice your active exercises. Use slow breathing and slow movements and that way you will get more energy and better energy. " ____________________________________________ Qigong Practice Improves Strength and Balance Last month we told you about a research study at the University of Illinois that found qigong practice can help improve immune function. The scientist who conducted that study, Dr. Yang Yang, has conducted other studies on the benefits of qigong and tai chi practice in older adults. An earlier study by Dr. Yang found that qigong and tai chi practice can provide significant physical improvement for older adults in as little as two months--improvement in lower body strength, balance, and stance. Additionally, participants reported their lives were enhanced from mental, emotional, and spiritual perspectives. _______________________________________________ Black Sesame Seeds The sesame seed is one of the oldest seeds known, used throughout the Middle East, Persia, and India as early as 3000 BC. Drawing on an Egyptian tomb from about 4,000 years ago depicts a baker adding the them to bread dough. According to Assyrian legend, the gods met one night, drank sesame seed wine, and created the world the next day! An interesting feature of the sesame seed pod is that it bursts open when it reaches maturity. Some think this is what inspired the phrase, " Open, sesame! " in the tale of " Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves " from The Arabian Nights. Black sesame seeds have a delightfully unique flavor and are an excellent source of calcium, magnesium, iron, protein, potassium, and essential fatty acids. In Level Two, Master Lin mentions that black sesame seeds help rebuild kidney energy, which aids in weight loss and " improves the body's overall beauty and hair condition. " They also can aid in the healing of cancer and kidney diseases and help with constipation and high cholesterol. Preparation of whole seeds: Rinse two to three tablespoons of black sesame seeds and combine with about eight ounces of water in a saucepan. Bring to a gentle boil, turn down heat, and simmer for five minutes. Allow to cool to room temperature, then eat the seeds and drink the broth. Says Beedle, SFQ Support Staff, " You can eat the seeds and drink the broth together or separately. I store a cooked batch in the 'fridge and eat a spoonful with a bit of broth at various times throughout the day. " Black sesame seeds can also be purchased ground in powder form and either mixed with hot water (or ying/yang water: half boiled and half regular, with honey to taste), or sprinkled over food--a nice visual treat! ______________________________________ (Following is an article written by SFQ student Lorna , a retired English teacher. It was published in the November, 2007, issue of Reflections, her union newsletter.) A World Without Pain Most of the people I've met in Spring Forest Qigong classes and workshops arrive looking for solutions to a variety of intractable health problems. Often, they have exhausted their options, and their doctors can't offer any hope for cures or healing. Qigong helps people learn techniques to remove energy blockages and to explore healing energy. After learning about and practicing Spring Forest Qigong daily since 2000, I continue to be intrigued by this powerful form of energy healing. Westerners are generally familiar with tai chi and yoga. Qigong is directly related to these disciplines and traces its history back thousands of years to China and India. Interest has rapidly increased in the Western world and the New York Times recently published an article about this ancient healing system. In Biology of Belief, cell biologist Bruce Lipton, Ph.D., provides a scientific explanation for how a system like qigong can work. The film What the Bleep is an exploration of cutting-edge science in a similar vein. Some people are merely curious, or they are searching for a way to help a friend or relative. They range in age from teenagers to people in their late eighties or older. At first, I was surprised by the number of teachers, counselors, social workers, psychologists, nurses, health practitioners (yes, even medical doctors), and countless others taking the courses. We share a curiosity about healing, are willing to try something different and like to explore unfamiliar topics. It's fun to tell others about our studies and discoveries. Qigong Master Chunyi Lin, founder for Spring Forest Qigong, offers courses in the Twin Cities through Normandale Community College. He has studied with his own qigong teachers in China for nearly thirty years and tells his story in the book Born a Healer. His goal: " A healer in every family and a world without pain. " Before he came to the U.S., he was a university professor and dean of his English department. In the introductory class I took many years ago, he immediately caught my attention when he said that Shakespeare is one of his favorite writers. He has a great way of measuring student progress and techniques: good, better, best. One doesn't get hung up on right and wrong, and learning becomes easy. His simplified approach to a complicated system fits well into the busy lives we live. _______________________________________________ Services available through SFQ Sessions at The SFQ Center During your half hour session at the SFQ Center, you will sit comfortably and share your concerns with an Advanced SFQ Specialist. He or she will move his or her hand several inches from your body to detect and remove energy blockages. Active exercises and/or healing meditations may be suggested for further benefit. When he is available, Master Lin will spend the last five minutes of your session continuing to assist you in your healing journey. Phone appointments Appointments with Master Lin, Master Nance, or one of the Advanced SFQ Specialists are also available by telephone. During a phone appointment, you briefly describe your concerns and then sit quietly while blockages are being detected and removed. Following the session, you may meditate or just rest for about 30 minutes to allow the energy to continue to move. Distance sessions With this type of session, there is no physical or verbal contact involved. Using simple information (a name, a location, a brief description of the area of concern), Master Lin, Master Nance, or one of the Specialists will remotely detect blockages and work to eliminate them. Scheduling: To schedule an in-office appointment, a phone session, or a distance session, please call the Spring Forest Center at . Classes Spring Forest currently offers four levels of classes: Level One for health; Level Two for healing; Level Three for advanced energy development and healing; and Level Four for techniques for spiritual healing and even more advanced ways to collect energy. Please check our website for more information. Conferences, Retreats and Workshops Conferences, retreats, and workshops are scheduled throughout the year. Keep an eye on our website (or this newsletter!) for announcements. _________________________________________________________________ Thank You! Thank you for your interest in Spring Forest Qigong.
