Autism, diet and urinary peptide testing (LONG)

I had to jump in on this diet and allergy testing conversation, hope

ya'll don't mind. Most of our children suffer from maldigestion of

foods which is evident by elevated urinary peptides (K.L Reichelt,,

numerous publications). Almost 85% of our children suffer from

serious microbial overgrowths of fungi, bacteria, parasites. (W.Shaw,

Biological Basis of Autism and PDD; Wakefield AJ, et al, Lancet

1998). Otherwise known as " Leaky gut syndrome " . Until you eliminate

the offending foods the gut can not heal and the gut flora can not be

balanced (good gut bugs/bad gut bugs). The unbroken down food

particles(usually the gluten and casein protein, but w/my child it is

only the casein protein) will continue to leak through the stomach

and continue to poison your child (toxins to the brain) also known as

the " Opioid Excess Theory " this theory is that the peptides normally

broken down completely in the digestion process, remain in autistic

intestines, and are absorbed (probably some contribution from

the " leaky gut " so common in autism allowing these molecules to be

absorbed into the blood system ultimately going to the child's

brain). These two proteins are KNOWN to break down into peptides with

opioid (morphine) activity. Casein (milk protein)-casomorphin and

Gluten (wheat, rye, barley and so on) gliadinomorphin,

gluteomorphins.

It is NOT an allergy, it is NOT Celiac Disease and it is NOT Lacto

intolerance. It IS a TOXIC DRUG LIKE REACTION !

There are only a few labs that do this type of testing, here are a

few Great Smokies Labs at www.greatsmokies-lab.com and AAL Reference

Labs 1- (Physician order only).

Our DAN doctor Amy Holmes says that she uses the test and the child's

symptoms to determine if the child would benefit from the diet.

El'Dahr another DAN doctor says that the testing is questionable and

therefore recommends the diet automatically for her patients and then

will check w/parents to see if any symptoms have improved (which

determines if it's worth continuing). However, they both agree that

it helps in aid to the gut healing.

A few symptoms of the " Opioid Excess Theory " are:

Zoned Out behavior, Increased hearing sensitivity, and high tolerance

for pain. Our son had self limited his diet to almost a

completely " milk " diet. A gallon of milk every two days when he was a

year old (weighed 32pnds) and would scream if he didn't have that ba-

ba ! He would stare off in space and droll excessively and would head

bang forever. He was addicted to the milk and drugged up on it. Once

we stopped the dairy (after a 2 wk period of pure HELL from the

withdrawal symptoms) he was so much more alert, would fall down and

cry because it hurt and was just a much happier little boy !!

I got some of this information from ARI's old paper " An Experimental

Intervention For Autism " 1994 and from my doctors own

papers. For more information go to:

This does NOT mean your child can't or won't have allergies, most of

our kids are allergic to everything and you could still do allergy

testing. Our DAN doctor said not to because it is expensive and that

he would probably show to be allergic to everything. Once you've

implemented the diet and if you still see symptoms then at that time

you would want to do allergy testing.

I gotta go my husband is walking out the door sorry for any typo's

(in a hurry)
