Hi Bobbi,

I was told by a nurse when my wife was having a parencentisis done that

sometimes you can tell how the liver /diseasefailure is progressing by how

quickly the fluid (ascites) returns. Obviously slow to fast would not be a good

sign. My wife developed ascites slowly. About every three months and only had

two parecentisis. So, for her it wasn't much of a sign of how the disease was

progressing. She developed encephalopathy.

This is why the sleep patter reverses. Toxins normally cleared by the liver,

aren't and stay in the blood. Because of this they reach the brain. This causes

the brain cells to react. Which is encephalopathy.

Here's a link with more information.

good day. We found out today that he was approved for SSI Disability. So now he

has Medicaid, and can see a doctor. He had paracentesis yesterday at the

hospital, and they got 9 liters. He can breathe and sleep again. How many liters

can be drained from his abdomen safely? He has a standing appointment every 2

weeks. He swells back usually within 3 days of the procedure. Is this an

indicator of how advanced his disease is? The last paracentesis they drained 12

liters....

I was wondering why sleep patterns are all screwy? Any ideas?

Thanks!

Bobbi - I live in Arizona, and we have what is call AHCCCS which stands for

Arizona Health Care Cost Containment system, pronounced access. It is our

medicaid. I don't see how their system does contain costs since there are

so many layers of bureaucracy to go through for approval for so many things,

but they would pay for a transplant for me if the doctors would put me on

the list. Maybe they knew I wouldn't be a candidate when I asked about it

because of all the other conditions I have which make me in their eyes a bad

risk. I think it will vary from state to state, so check out your

provider. You should have a phone number on your card to call with any

questions. Jan H

They will not be happy at all about him smoking, and push come to shove, they

will not transplant an active smoker, that I know of. Here is a link to the

guidlines.

and I cut and pasted from the PDF

https://www.aasld.org/eweb/DynamicPage.aspx?webcode=Endstage

<Cigarette Smoking>

In one survey of more than 200 liver transplant recipients,

60% reported a lifetime history of smoking.62 A

number of recent studies have demonstrated the deleterious

effects of smoking on outcomes after transplantation.

The risk of hepatic artery thrombosis appears to be significantly

increased among chronic smokers.63 This effect

disappears in chronic smokers who discontinue nicotine

use 2 years before transplantation.63 Long-term postoperative

survival of smokers also is decreased because of an

increase in cardiac mortality and death from malignancies

Recommendations

12. All patients considered for liver transplantation

should be encouraged to undergo efforts to abstain

from smoking (III).

My Daddy

Well, he went to the doc about his black poking-out belly button,

and they said that he has a hernia. He has ben referred to a gastroenterologist.

He got his medcaid card in the mail today. Does medicaid/medicare pay for liver

transplants? Will they even consider him for a transplant if he is still

smoking?
