Guest guest
Dear Jane I agree that this sounds a bit like vulvodynia, or at least a similar condition affecting the urethra. I have been seeing a patient for this, who has been taking herbs now for a few years, and wouldn't be without them. Her prescription has varied over time, as you would imagine, as she has had a number of other problems as well, but has basically consisted of urinary antiseptics and demulcents as necessary (her original presentation was with recurrent urinary infections, and pain which was worse after sex), and nervines, with a heavy emphasis on stress relief, and antispasmodics, which has proved a good strategy. I've also paid a lot of attention to vaginal dryness, (also a lady of a certain age) and to her recurrent anal fissure (cream made up of a third comfrey/calendula ointment, third echinacea cream, third witchhazel cream, which she swears by). I suspect a lot of the pain comes from the anal fissure as it has eased a lot since we started treating this (they can be excruciatingly painful, with referred pain to adjacent structures, and can also be quite deep, ask if she's been examined for this). It's obviously also a good idea to treat any constipation, check for any gynae probs, sexual difficulties etc. and to keep an eye out for any hint of emotional trauma eg sexual abuse, rape or relationship difficulties which may produce a physical manifestation like vaginismus. Sorry, I'm probably trying to teach granny to suck eggs here, just got carried away! Still, hope it's of some help. Cheers Alison M. Get more from the Web.
