In Biomedicine: white spots on nails have been associated with:

Zinc deficiency and/or fungal infections (maybe related to other

dermatological complaints?)

Vertical ridges have been linked to malabsorption of nutrients (or

inadequate intake)

Different meanings in TCM & Ayurveda

let me know of you need more references

Looked up HD Bach on nails: he says that white spots are caused by air

entering the nailsubstance, in women due to cyclical hormonal imbalances.

Vertical lines he has found to be associated with chronic GIT dysfunction.

Horizontal lines he sees likrwise connected to GIT dysfct, also infections,

toxicity, hyperuraemia.

Tamsin, where did you get your info on vertical ridges from from?

And has any of you experienced herbalists ever made those observations??
