Guest guest
Hi, I'm Liz. I have never seen Steve on T.V., but saw this group, read about him, and was very inspired by him. I'm retired two years now. I lived in an urban area and walked all the time. Now I live in the country, across the street from an unused airfield that I could walk on, but I am afraid of stray dogs. I used to walk a ways up the airfield and then on to the main road, most of it uphill, but the other day my husband said he saw two stray pit bulls. Now I am terrified to go on walks alone. Any suggestions? I did just buy an excercise bike, but I love to walk. Liz in Arkansas
Guest guest
My daughter walks long distances sometimes into places where there are loose dogs. She carries aerosol dog repellant which she purchased at PetSmart (also available online) and it has been effective for her. I have a 105 pound Labrador Retriever who I take walking with me. He seems to strike fear into stray dogs, as they do not approach us. Would either of these measures help? W. Hello from New Member Hi, I'm Liz. Guest guest
I am afraid that I would be more dangerous than the pit bull with a 45 in my hand, . I'll have to depend on my Lab, Jeb to defend me. A pit bull running loose either belongs to an irresponsible owner or is a stray and either way needs to be dealt with by the local authorities, I am sure you agree :-) W. In my neighborhood a poodle was recently killed by a pit running loose. Good morning Y'all. A good day is wished for you
Guest guest
Yes bear spray is what I carry as well......I never leave home without it! lol It says it can cause blindness in humans but when I am backpacking, I feel anyone who tries to harm or threaten me probably deserves it. And I have never had to use it, but I would not hesitate if I felt threatened! Jane

I live way out in the boonies, we have a stray dog number to call, but by the time they get here, the dogs are long gone. I have two young Jack Terriors but I don't take them on the my walks. . .just their walks. Liz Re: Hello from New Member Now I am terrified to go on walks alone. Any suggestions? Guest guest
Thanks . I used to have a huge Standard Poodle and when his hair was long and out, other dogs would turn and walk away. I have 2 young terriors, who would be of no help, but I will look for the dog spray at Petco. We will get some sound clips up for you soon. Its on our New CD Dance with the Eagle. Guest guest
look for bear spray, it's more expensive, but it holds way more than your usual container. it also sprays farther and with a heavier stream of liquid. i dont think i'd trust my old small container of pepper spray against 2 dogs. is there any authority you can report the dogs to? one dog is a nuisance, but 2 can develop pack behavior and be a serious threat, and if they are good dogs, they deserve a second chance. laurie > > > In a message dated 5/11/2006 6:29:59 PM Central Standard Time, > arkiegirlagain@... writes: > > Now I am terrified to go on walks alone. Guest guest
Hi I am new here, just joined yesterday.I have become an avid walker in the past few months.I walk on rural roads and there is a pair of dogs in a neighborhood near me [not to mention that occasionally someone dumps a dog on the road], but I stay away from that road in the evenings, it seems that is when they are out. Has anyone thought of using a squirt bottle filled with ammonia to detour dogs? [detour? I hope that is the right word *laughs*]. I also walk with my dog, she is a border collie and I doubt she could hold her own against an aggressive dog, because she is just 40# soaking wet. I would buy pepper spray, but right now things are tight and I do have ammonia in the cupboard :)LindyLiz Bliss wrote: labtrek1941 wrote: I am afraid that I would be more dangerous than the pit bull with a 45 in my hand, . Guest guest
If it were a squirt bottle that shot a stream at a distance, that might be a good thing. In my experience, if they are really strays, they would tend to keep their distance anyway. It is the dogs being territorial that are usually a menace. W. I really don't know how effective ammonia would be on stopping a determined dog.
