Guest guest
Hi Barby, I'm doing well. I'm starting to freak out a little bit about having to do the treatment for the Hep C in two weeks. It's probably silly, but I have always been affraid of it and that is why I had to get a transplant because I never did it. I hope I'm building up more fear than what I really need to. It's just that I feel so much better since the transplant, I don't want anything like nasty side effects making me feel worse. It's weird that I'm such a baby about this, but the transplant was a piece of cake for me. Maybe it is just the anticipation and thinking about it too much. Anyway, I've had Hep C since 1983, that I know of. I had an acute case and got sick right away, but they thought it was Hep B back then. I wasn't told anything about treatment for years since I was told I was just a carrier, and it wouldn't harm my liver, until a biopsy in 1991 said I had mild fibrosis. Treatment was mentioned then, but the doctor didn't think it was necessary. I went on SSDI in 2001, and my primary physician was on my case all the time to go to a gastroenterologist to get treatment, and I did go to a couple of them. One didn't want me to do treatment because my platelet count was low, and the other one wanted me to do it, but like I said before I was affraid of the treatment. I didn't think I needed to do it since I felt fine except for being tired all the time. My next biopsy in 2004 said I had cirrhosis. Last year when I had another biopsy, I was diagnosed with end stage liver disease, liver failure...decompensated cirrhosis with ascites (excess fluid in the abdomen), varices (tears in the esophogas), edema (swelling in ankles, feet, & legs), portal hypertension (high blood pressure in the portal vein leading to the liver), and an umbilical hernia caused by the ascites. I went into the hospital for the hernia on December 23, was released for one day after that surgery, had to go back because my blood counts were dangerously low, and was there until my transplant on January 6, and I was released on January 16. I had multiple blood and plasma transfusions before both surgeries. I was on the transplant list for one month before I got a new liver. My genotype is 1a. My Meld score was 21 when I had the hernia surgery, and 29 when I had the transplant. I hope that wasn't too long and that it helps you a bit. Guest guest
Yes, PegInterferon (weekly injection) with Ribavirin (anti viral pills). The shots are given to yourself. I have a friend who did the treatment before who is going to help me with the shots the first few times I have to do them. My husband is squeamish, but he will be learning too. Guest guest
Penny,  It is good someone will help you at first. You will come to be able to do it yourself. I can give myself shots of insulin....sometimes six a day.....but to give someone else a shot....well I am with your husband.  Lyncia Subject: Re: penny...
