Guest guest
Hi everyone, I currently have a patient who would like to know if there is anything she can take to prevent being bitten by mosquitoes especially the malarial kind since she is undertaking an exotic holiday soon. Any suggestions would be welcomed. From oils to rub on to things to take internally. Thanks Lorraine Hodgkinson info@...
Guest guest
Dear Lorraine, In Greenfiles, Summer 1999 page 17 there is an abstract about Yarrow as a mosquito repellent. " An ethanolic extract had a high antifeedant effect on mosquitoes, an example of the whole extract being effective but not the isolated constituents. When comparisons were made between the effects of Achillea ethanolic extract and oils from other mosquito repellants, the Achillea was found to be the most effective. Ess. oils of birch/pine tar, citronella, eucalyptus and lily of the valley were also effective. Essential oils of 4 species of lemon grass were tested and found to be 85% effective as mosquito repellants, mainly for the first 4 hours. " Vitamin B2 is also reputed to be effective in a high dose (about 100mg/day?), as it causes a B.O. to mosquitoes. But take it with a B complex to avoid imbalances of the other B vits. Internally, Artemisia annua is antiparasitic in high doses if bitten, and is well tolerated. No proof that it is prophylactic. I hope this helps. Cooke -cooke@...
