Dear Alison,

Aromatic capsules made with essential oils can be effective in treating H

pylori. Some years ago I did a small study with a doctor who did

endoscopies after treatment. We used a simple formula for the purposes of

seeing what EO's might do but since that time I have been able to explore

other EO's in practice. For the trial there was mixed success but most got

rid of their H pylori, some with ulcers did not. (If it had not been a

trial I would have added other agents).

The essential oils that can be used are Cinnamon bark, Clove, Tea tree and

Thymus spp. and there are others. Mostly the EO's that contain phenols or

alcohols are antibacterial. I have used Thyme vulg. CT thymol and Thyme

capitatus which is rich in the phenol carvacrol. It is crucial to know that

your EO's are authentic. Much of the Thyme essential oil is " red thyme "

which is often Thymus zygis with synthetic thymol added. Don't use thyme

unless you are sure of the type.

The initial formula (from the trial and the EO's were organic) was capsules

half filled with olive oil, (however for gastritis or ulcers oil of

calophyllum is excellent because of its anti inflammatory action).

Essential oil of clove 1 drop, tea tree 1 drop and cinnamon bark 1 drop.

One capsule t.i.d. with meals for three weeks, no longer. Most people

tolerate well and prefer to antibiotics. I would use other soothing agents

ie liquorice, cabagin extract, gamma oryzanol or herbal demulcents. I

might add that although it is obviously desirable to get rid of H pylori I

think one need to explore why the person has it. The old idea of terrain.

In other words treatment at a deeper level is best.

Hope this helps,

There is good deal of evidence about efficacy of Pistachia lentiscu chia or

Mastic gum (contact me if you need references) against H. pylori. It is

popular in Greek (that's where the tree mainly grows) folk medicine for

digestive problems. N.B. Herbal Apothecary sells it.

Best Wishes

Sorry it's taken so long. So much work and so litle time...

I have two 'proper' publications and some articles on Mastic Gum.

References:

Huwez FU, Al-Haabal Mj - Mastic in treatment of benign gastric ulcers

Gastroenterol Japan 1986; 21:273-4

Al-Habbabl Mj, Al-Habbal Z, Hufez FU - A double-blind controlled clinical

trial of masic and placebo in the treatment of duodenal ulcer

Clin EXp Pharm Physiol 1984; 11; 541-4

There has been some scientific work at Nottingham University (led by Dr D.

Ala'Aldeen) and the results may be published by now.

I came up with a 'herbal tripple therapy' for H. pylor related uclers:

Mastica with Caesaria sylvestris and Maytenus ilicifolia (two south American

herbs with anti-ulcer properties; don't ask me how to get them; I brought

mine with me form Brazil). It seemed to do the trick for a patient of mine.

Best Wishes

Dirk
