Surely at the time of the American founding 90+% of the American

population believed just that (well, maybe not that many believed in the

rapture). I'm reminded of a story de Tocqeuville tells about an American

judge who was asked by his bailiff how to swear in as a witness a man

who said he didn't believe in God. The judge was nonplused because he

had never run into anyone who did not believe in God.
