I am ambivilant about that. In other words I do not believe that you HAVE to go to AA to get and remain sober. But... it turned my life around totally.The thing that answers your question is that this a place where you can find the recovery stories. especially in the sub chapter " they stopped in time " . The story I was referring to is in the personal stories, and then look in part three, " they nearly lost all " , it is chapter 5, Twice gifted. I used to speak of Ardis in my early sobriety at AA meetings(I realize I am still in my early sobriety, a year and 4 months being nothing compared to the old timers) but really, I often thought of the story " Twice gifted " and think that Ardis was my gift from God, that my job to care for her was not only a big lesson in life, and loss, but left me at a huge cross roads. Do I follow her path, separate from Sharon, and drink beer until liver failure, and meet my end before age 45, or do I check into detox, get straight, and fight like hell, knowing that a death just like hers awaited me if I chose her path, but with one big difference... I would not be there in the hospice holding my hand, and Sharon cannot do this again, of that fact I am quite sure. So, I fight. The alternative is to die alone, disgraced from a family that is hardly around now, so I cannot imagine them being here for me if I chose to drink. My cousin Dave did chose to drink, and all he is now is a quick mention at family gatherings, nothing more.
