I was at the Herbal conference of American Herbalist Guild in Oct. and Winston was promoting Epiloba to be used more over there and citing Treben, BHP and candida. My books report the following: I can't understand the fascination some people have with Treben. Over here people who know herbs tremble when they hear her name ... her book is not very good, no matter how many copies it has sold. Jonno, a Treben review on your site, perhaps? > Rhizome: has fewer tannins, no mucilages. traditionally decocted or chewed for stomach disroders including diarrhea. ( hence the candida use?) I've _never_ used the root for candida. I couldn't be bothered to dig it up - I know of no use for it. Astringent? There are _loads_ of astringents all around, there's no need to dig up roots (of _any_ plant) for that. E. angustifolium is one of my favorite plants, because the leaf is so very easy to pick. And because it works, of course. Edible use... umm. Asparagus-like vegetable from the very young stems, right, but do remove the green brush that is the leaf, or you won't be able to eat it, let alone sell the idea that it's edible to others. Leaf as spinach - you'll try it once and never again. Leaf in salads - I've tried it, no thanks. It really is more of a tea than a food plant. Cheers Henriette -- hetta@...
