Guest guest
This is amazing to me, as my daughter has at different times struggled with repeat ear infections--we have never found garlic oil helpful (either home made or store bought), along with many other " surefire " remedies that were recommended to us. I have heard positive things about using onion juice, but have yet to try this... I have also heard that garlic can increase pain sensitivity for a short time, and we thought we were observing that in my daughter, so added a drop of tea tree oil to the garlic oil which seemed to reduce that effect. We have found Chinese remedies more effective, Chuan Xin Lian and Niu Huang Jie Du Pian--when my daughter was a baby I would crush these on a spoon and add maple syrup. Fascinating discussion, right now we are trying the hydrogen peroxide thing, I hope this works. Guest guest
Thanks for sharing! Did you read what Bee says about leaving the garlic and olive oil in the ear and let it dry out? We are going to give that another try because I do believe in garlic as being great at healing. We tried the hydrogen peroxide last night but it did not help. My husband says it is very uncomfortable and hurts. It also will sting and burn. You are supposed to wait until all the hurting/stinging/burning has gone and then turn over and let it drain out. I may have not put enough in as none drained out! Don't know how often this is supposed to be done for some relief. Heidi posted awhile back her experience with HP which was not good. We are going for the neti pot next. Guest guest
Dear Leann, When garlic oil is made it is almost impossible to retain all of the beneficial properties of the real thing, and would not as effective as good certified organic raw garlic. Guest guest
Dear Del, Store bought hydrogen perioxide will defintely burn. I would recommend mixing it half and half with sterile water before putting it in the ears. I've use that mixture on many infections, including my daughter's foot when she got a nail through it and it works very well. I haven't tried it in ears however. Heat is a great healer of ears too. We used a light bulb held close enough to the ear to feel quite warm, but not close enough to burn. Heat draws out the infection and is very soothing. Guest guest
Our personal experience with the hydrogen peroxide in the ears--my husband, daughter, and I have all tried it, as there is a horrible cold/flu going around right now, and in particular my daughter actually had an ear infection in one ear (which we finally had to resort to antibiotics as our preferred remedies did not work this time, a rare experience). None of us experienced " stinging " per se, as some folks have described. Personally I found it ticklish! I think the sensory experience must vary from person to person, and especially if you have a sore in the ear--well that would sting for sure! Initially the ear my daughter had the infection in bubbled madly, now doesn't froth at all. If she gets another infection any time soon (praying she doesn't, this is 2 in 30 days!) I am going to try the garlic trick, see if it helps. I would be very happy to have this work, as we have a bucket of garlic harvested from last year's garden! Thanks for the very clear instructions on how to use the garlic in the ear. Leann
Guest guest
Leann, Onion juice would be similar to homeopathic allium cepa (onion) which has effect on the most cold like symptoms. You answered my mullein addition to some garlic ear oils. If garlic increases pain sensitivity, mullein relieves it. Guest guest
Bee, A blow dryer on low works well too. That was in a Prevention home remedy book. Health food stores sell ear candles which are a waste to me. Got a Prevention brochure yesterday with headline about fighting obesity in your children with fatty foods. Guest guest
Dear Wanita, Using a hair dryer is a great idea and it would be easier to handle. Interesting about fighting obesity in children with fatty foods - maybe it would be too much to expect, but I hope they recommend good fats. Bee > Bee, > > A blow dryer on low works well too.
