Yep. That made me look, and I realized I shouldn't have quoted Tierney about

the Jivaro, because he was inaccurately summarizing another author. However,

it was immaterial to the point.

I agree. There's more to it than that though-- the culture of civilization

is very important. Diamond says that the Fayu have since been culturally

civilized simply by being convinced that killing is immoral.

That said, murder was so common largely due to the absence of an objective

system of adjudication.

I'm sorry--I haven't been following this thread very closely, but...are you

saying that murder is okay, as long as it strengthens the gene pool?

Ummm .. no. When it comes to society, I see three levels

of discussion:

1. How humans actually act (history, anthropology, psychology, evolutionary

adaptation).

2. How we would LIKE society to be, ideally

3. Given #1, how to create #2.

I brought it up in terms of #1. I happen to disagree with a LOT

of how the world actually works ... old age, for example, isn't

on my list of ideals, nor are parasites, mildew, cyclones ...

However, once you get rid of " murder " then you also might

have to deal with an expanding population. One of those Inuit

articles mentioned their population is expanding now ... how

many Inuit do you think the Arctic can support?
