No consumer protection?

I have been half way government departments to to try and find the

government body which oversees the safety of imported products.

Apparently it doesn't exist. Consumer Direct, Office of Fair trading

don't know of a government body either :-((

Does this mean that consumers are not protected here at all against

dangerous substances.

Anybody know of any body where I can find out whether a dangerous

substance is contained in an imported product which I bought. Short of

tearing the product up myself to have a look inside (product cost over

1,000 pounds) I have no further recourse at the moment.

I cannot believe that consumers are so at the mercy of retailers here.
