Guest guest
You are very baaaaad today Ruthie ! Just remember, what goes around comes around ! And no, the neighbours weren't woken up, it was a very small fire ! Just an itty-bitty spark in fact ! While I think about it, would you have a decent recipe for sauerkraut ? I don't want something out of a fancy cooking magazine or book. I prefer something " au naturel " , like the kind that get passed on from family to family. I have my own recipe but I made it up from long ago memories from when I lived in Europe so I'm just looking for something a little bit different. I see has bratwurst out for supper, maybe I'll surprise her. She probably just plans to BBQ them. She's out in a parade for St Ambulance today, in a wet, damp, cold and overall miserable day. I know she won't feel much like cooking. Mike > > > > I THOUGHT I smelled something burning during the night. Did you come up > with anything overnight? This ought to go good with the brats! does ALL the German cooking around here so I just asked him for the exact details. So here it is, direct from the 'experts' mouth, minus the accent: If you can't get sauerkraut from the barrel then the next best is the kind in the bag. If you can get the kind in the foil bag that is imported from Germany so much the better. Drain the sauerkraut and save the liquid. BRIEFLY wash the kraut under cold water. Dump it into a pot, add half the liquid you drained off and add just about that much water. Add bay leaves (2-3 depending on how much you're making) and Juniper Berries (important!)...usually 4 or 5 for one bag of kraut. Also add a slice of apple and a bit of brown sugar if you like it sweeter. If you don't like it real sweet then just add the slice of apple. If you taste it later and it's not sweet enough for you then add brown sugar or more brown sugar. Simmer, covered, for about 3 hours. You can cook it for a shorter time if you want, it will just taste a bit different. We've found that we get different tastes depending on how long we cook it and that's always fun. The taste also changes depending on how much of each item above you put in. The most important item we've found is the Juniper Berries. They really DO make a difference. You can get them in the spice section of your grocery store. They look like largish peppercorns. Good luck! Makes me HUNGRY! I hope had fun in the parade despite the weather. It's cold here and every now and then a few flakes drop down but nothing REAL yet. But it sure looks like snow is a-comin' and smells like it. I'm keeping inside and warm. I will go pick up my new glasses later today, after 4pm they said, and then hopefully have fun with my Ham Radio contest that starts and 4pm and runs until tomorrow evening. I've turned my cam over to where the radio is cuz some of my ham friends and I are keeping tabs on each other, friendly competition and all that. No sound on the web cam though and not all of us have enough bandwidth to do a NetMeeting w/audio. So instead I'm just leaving the web cam up and they can see it that way. It won't make much sense to my non-ham friends that like to check the cam to see what is there that day but oh well. Happy Saturday! Guest guest
I was just telling Ken that I blew the whole of the last 24 hours. It started day before yesterday with a " white night " ( nuit blanche in French ) where I found myself still awake at 4:30 am so decided to get up, it finally hit me and I ended up sleeping some 20 hours of the last 24. It is 4:20 am now and I just woke up for good. I'm stiff as hell but my mind is quite refreshed ( so I can really feel the stiffness I guess ! ). When I asked for the recipe was in between sleeps while I was up for a bit. I ended up back in bed sawing logs about an hour after. ended up waking me for supper and 30 minutes later I was back in the sack. Lin and Carol are very good about this. We've come to look at these episodes as messages sent to the body that it's time to charge up the batteries again so they get really quiet and let me sleep it off. This makes up for all the times when I short my body out of an hours sleep here and there and for the times when I flare up a bit but refuse to go lay down. So, I ended up with BBQ'd bratwurst. By the way, why do they make these sausages so black and crispy on the outside and so tender on the inside ? When took them off the BBQ, she said they came that way.....!!! ( We keep teasing each other over this. Last night she said she was trying to achieve the same colour as the last steaks I cooked ! I think we should write a cook book with our family recipes. It would include " Black steak " , Black potatoes " , " Black Chicken " and our favorite, " Black Sausages " ! ) Can I come over for supper some time ? What you had sounded exceptionally good ! Have a good day ! Mike > Re: I'm hungry ! > > > > > > : > : > :Thanks Ruthie. I'll give it a go. > > > Great! Let me know how it came out!
