Guest guest
Check this out! There is a fascinating article in today (Friday, May 12)'s Wall Street Journal cover page, about a lady who suffered a paralytic stroke, was forced to paint with her left hand, and emerged inexplicably a far better painter than she ever was before the stroke. It is titled, " A tragedy transforms a right-handed artist into a lefty-- and a star " . The WSJ discusses some hypotheses. I don't subscribe to the electronic version, but I'll try to get a copy and post it here. Disappointingly, no mention of the unconscious. But they do talk about weakening the censoring function of the brain, which was " damaged " by the stroke. Perhaps the healing strengthened other parts of the brain. Reminds me of Gurdjieff's advocacy of exercises such as " brushing teeth with opposite hand " to get us out of auto-pilot. The sample paintings pre- and post-stroke are very telling even to a layman like me. - Anand
