Guest guest
Hi all, Does anyone have any advise on the following. I had a meeting at my sons school- he is in an ASD base attached to a mainstream school. He is 10 and going into primary 6 (Scotland). They have said that they are having great problems with his sensory needs and are suggesting that he moves school. I have said that this will not happen and i am looking for ways to improve things for . By sensory I would say that they predominantly mean that he stims (his particulaer stim is spinning objects), he also covers his ears a lot and we are on week 6 of the listening program. He also needs to use up lots of energy and can get hyperactive although this has greatly improved. They have also said that he is easily distracted and only concentrates for short periods of time. We did have an OT but in their wisdom the health authority (OT comes from health and not education) have decided that they will not be adressing sensory issues and therefore does not qualify for OT as he passed other testing for motor skills etc,... The school have implemented some strategies eg breaks where he gets to bounce on sports balls etc. A ball pool and a sensory room. Does anyone on the list have a good contact for sensory integration? (As close to Glasgow as possible- or is that nigh impossible?) RDI- there is also a major problem in that is inappropriate with his peers. He cudlles them and pushes them to get their attention in an attempt to interact. He is desperate to interact with his peers. I have looked at many things and have decided to try RDI. We have been doing ABA for 8 years and I hope this will help. Would anyone be willing to speak to me about RDI so that I can check that I am doing it right. Also are there any RDI supervisors in the UK? Any advise would be great. Elaine
