When I complained of shortness of breath, the doctor tested me for

Hepatopulmonary syndrome. I tested positive, and the explanation given to us is

as follows: Nitric oxide is what regulates the size of your blood vessels. If you

are having a heart attack you get a nitro pill ,guess what it turns into in

your body? Nitric oxide or NO. This is the exact effect that the drug viagra

has on blood vessels. Viagra turns into NO, dialates the vessels. With HPS, the

excess NO cant be cleared by the damaged liver, it builds up, and causes spleen

enlargement, and also HPS. The capilarries in the base of the lungs becoms

dialated. The blood flows too fast to get the oxygen attatched to it. Also the

blood vessels are too large and the blood in the middle cant reach the oxygen

anymore.
