Hi Lyudmyla,

Like , I learnt on-the job, but I couldn't agree more with him:

learning how to confirm the terms and expressions is paramount and there's

no end to learning (which is one of the top reason it's a great job)... Of

course this doesn't apply to medical doctors who turn to translation, but

very much to translators who wish to specialize in the medical field.

Hi Lyudmyla,

Below are some relevant websites. The first two are for translation

certificates from recognized institutions of higher learning in the US, but

they each include medical translation courses. I believe they can both be

done online. I have always wanted to sign up, but have been too busy.

Unfortunately, I don't know the real value of any of these courses. I myself

learned by being recruited by a doctor where I live and working closely with

her and a couple colleagues in material related to their specialties for a

couple years before I started offering my services elsewhere. The most

important thing to learn, in my view, is how to confirm the correctness of a

term or expression by finding it with the same meaning in authoritative

target-language medical writing. You will often end up spending many more

hours confirming even a few terms than 'typing'. In other words, medical

translation, like medicine itself, is something for which you have never

finished studying. I end up re-studying for almost every job. The rates are

higher than in most other kinds of translation, but a conscientious person

(and I hope no other kind enters it) will find that many jobs require

laborious confirmation of specific terminology and the standard means of

expressing things. One

big problem is that there is no perfectly trustworthy bilingual dictionary

anywhere (at least Spanish<>English), except perhaps Dr. Navarro's

(Diccionarrio crítico de dudas español-inglés de medicina), and that is a

dictionary that deals only with problem terms (and for me, it is also

inconvenient that it is strictly English>Spanish).
