Guest guest
Does your school not have a specific OT room with proper equipment? You mentioned it is ASD specific so it should - I became a governor to obtain this as our school used to be MLD is now 70% ASD so some practices need updating. also has poor temp control but restricts stripping to the home environment and is no longer tactile defensive after all our " squishy " games. Our OT is from NZ so is more up to date than most UK OTs. > > >>>The report says home visit and classroom observation, I can't recall her coming here (spooky) , it says the assessments she completed were Reisman and Hanshu?1992 and Green 2000. Says things like insists on large personal space because he doesn;t like unexpected touch due to tactile defensiveness. (the carer) said probably because he was severely bitten in class 9 times in 3 weeks last year! Who the hell likes unexpected touch anyways? Says he has to have layered clothing at school to provide deep pressure however, strips at home because he hates feelign of clothes. Does that not sound contradictory? He used to strip everywhere, in seconds, now he only does it at home and I think thats a habit not tactile defensiveness and he has poor temperature control due to his toxicity - its better since chelation but not gone. i think she is only in school (employed there) for 2 days per week so probably only does assessments and then passes the buck? > > Mandi x > > PS do you mean she didn't even work with him on in OT room to do the > assessment? Guest guest
You really only need a large classroom with a high roof - the main piece of equipment is an iron frame with various things hanging off it(£5k) - the weighted vests can be made by any one with a sowing machine, the rest of the equipment is not so expensive but does need renewing over time. It bothers me when something as mainstream as OT is not catered for in ASD schools. Well done getting a pool tho' OTs often recommend that as well.... > > >>Its been done to death - £5Mil for school, just finished the pool, that was another 1.25 mil, meanwhile the Friends sit on £80K, its run by a load of old trouts who only ever spend the interest.....sigh > > Mandi x > > Time for some serious fundraising and a building programme. > > > > > > > ________________________________________________________________________ > AOL Email goes Mobile! Guest guest
This gets up my nose...talk about dangling a carrot...The health Executive funded a SI 3 day training here last year. I went...best training ever to be told on the last day there were no facilities or OTs to treat our children..Despicable Only for Cian's teacher and the school he would n't be getting his OT assessment followed up either...and the HSE seem to do these assessments when school is about to close! Guest guest
havent had OT for a year now, dont miss it. For us, it was a load of old cobblers. The OT was not sensory integratoin trained and kept going on about the Bobath method which does NOT apply to us at all. WE get plenty of " OT " going to the park, out on the trampoline and via body brushing, ball bouncing etc. Seems the more my boy uses his body (especially in the summer) the better he uses his body. he can now run like the wind, where before he would always fall. Guest guest
I agree with both of you but there are parents who would like to avail of proper SI services and all OTs do is talk about it. What is the point of endless time wasting assessments if they have nothing to deliver? They still get paid and stick a document in a file somewhere, proof that you received services when in actual fact you received nothing but travel expenses and unnecessary anxt. Guest guest
Diet is also a major factor here. Going GFCF is what sorted out some big issues like temperature. would strip off all the time, even in mid winter before the diet. He didn't feel pain at all, couldn't be toilet trained, would sit in freezing cold bath water etc., This was all overcome with diet. So I figure a lot of this sensory integration can be tackled from the inside out. stepbystep67 wrote: I agree with both of you but there are parents who would like to avail of proper SI services and all OTs do is talk about it. Guest guest
The trick is to get OT qualifications specified in the statement - problem is the UK is way behind other nations on this and only have a SI network so getting an Australian, South African, New Zealander has been the only option locally. A good OT has brought a lot to the table for us, the first one was pretty poor but the rest have been great.'s sensory issues were subtle but largely sorted it was other stuff like muscle tone and motor skills which were being overlooked so yes exercise is key. The KEY difference we have found is honesty - the OTs from the southern hemisphere are honest about the level of need (and whether they could support or not) while the home grown ones either through ignorance or conspiracy were not. This is a big allegation but locally a number of families have encountered this. This kind of institutional discrimination is rife for relatively mainstream treatments in our PCT so getting the kind of bio med issues discussed here are a long way off (but I still think there has to be pressure exercised locally and nationally before we get a step change in thinking.) Tackling this individually through the statement is one way - another is to use the Equality Impact Assessments EIAs on the PCTs policies or to lobby, writing to MPs etc. Anyhow that's my little rant over... > > > > > > > > > > >> All I have id the report and nothing about equipment or > > > > anything. Guest guest
This is because you won't get it on the NHS. The only route is to find a real specialist, who will be private and who will be expert in reading and understanding the child. It is possible to get OT in the Statement but it cost quite a bit to do this and took ages. It might be more appropriate and no more expensive to pay for it also Caudwell might fund it as it's an intervention... Margaret Some names that comes to mind: Jane Horwood, Jane Abdullah, there is also a practice in Guildford. Find an expert, not just someone who has done a couple of courses. > > > > > > > > > > >> All I have id the report and nothing about equipment or > > > > anything. Guest guest
Even children in the lowest 2% are not likely to be offered OT, least not in my neck of the woods. We had to win OT at tribunal, Jane Abdullah report which was the only thing to be granted and it was in it's entirety as her report was so professional and County had no one to argue against it. Guest guest
Hello We are lined up to go to Tribunal for our son. The LEA are arguing against us on ABA,SLT and OT. We are well covered on the first two but not OT. We think our son has a number of sensory issues - he is autistic. Do you have full contact details fro Jane Abdullah or even better do you know any OT expert in sensory evaluations etc nearer where we live (Yorkshire ) ? Any pointers very gratefully recieved - the early exchanges with the NHS OT and SLT are very discouraging Andy Subject: Re: Re: proprioceptive activitiesTo: Autism-Biomedical-Europe Date: Tuesday, July 29, 2008, 4:00 PM Even children in the lowest 2% are not likely to be offered OT, least not in my neck of the woods.
