Guest guest
> My understanding is that if the pt has Medicare, they will cover Pancreas Transplants as long as they are simultaneous or post Medicare covered kidney transplants. However if the patient no longer has Medicare coverage, then they will not cover and the private ins will be responsible. > W. McFall > SFMC Honolulu [Aguiar, ] Nor will Medicare cover pancreas BEFORE a kidney tx (which we do here). Unfortunately, many case mgrs don't realize this & I have just finished fighting w/what, under normal circumstances, would have been the secondary payor trying to make her understand that they would have to approve & pay for this particular type of transplant. (I won, needless to say). Medicare also didn't issue any requirements for tx ctrs to obtain Medicare certification to perform pancreas tx's, something else case mgrs don't always realize (that was yesterday's fight-won that one, too). The only requirement is that centers performing pancreas txs be members of the OPTN, which is UNOS currently. J.
