Lena, I hope you move and hide your savings. My best friend got ssdi, but she

was urged to hide it (it wasn't all that much) and ended up qualifying for

medicare and medicaid and we found her a really nice hospice. She didn't have to

die in the dump of a nursing home she was in. I have never read anything that

proved that milk thistle was an kind of miracle, although it might bring you

something more valuble than money... Hope. I hope you can get him to a good

hepatologist at a transplant hospital for a transplant eval. As I posted to Greg

earlier, no is not no until it comes directly from the TRANSPLANT team. Don't

worry abput the money, just get the referral.

question about supplements

Hello,

I joined the group back in Dec. Because my husband was having

problems with swollen feet, legs and stomach. Since then the doctor

put him on two different water pills one with potassium twice a day

(spironolact 25mg) and one is (furosemide 20mg)once a day. Also

folic acid, B1 and multi vitiams. Low sodium diet and was told he

needed more protein.

Update: he has lost 30lbs to date and the swelling is gone from his

feet and legs. The stomach is still swollen but not as hard any more.

Since we don't have any insurance and can't get help because we have

money in a saving account. (that i'm thinking about removing and

hiding it some where else...lol)

The only test we had done are the blood test which each time come

back a little better.

So to sum it up we don't know if what he has, if it is cirrosis or

just the start of something.

He has stopped drinking (which was only beer over 20 years) since

Dec 1st.

I been researching a product called Liv 52 and Milk thistle both

look to have some good long term studies with good results. Has any

one here tried either one in the beginning stages?

Thank you and I just join the other group also:)

Please give it time before he notices any kind of a difference. I found out

that traditional doctors and herbal supplements conflict often due to the

economy of scales with the pharmaceutical industry.

He most likely has cirrhosis. Did the doctor give a diagnosis when he prescribed

the medication for the edema (swollen legs/feet) and ascites (swollen abdomen)?

Heart problems can also cause this by the way.

Milk Thistle won't hurt and may help protect whatever part of the liver is still

functioning. You may also try Alpha Lipoic Acid. It's an antioxidant that helps

protect the cell membranes from being damaged by toxins or free radicals.

SAMe also has shown to protect the liver in some trials.

Can your husband apply for disability?

I am not as familiar with supplements without my dr.'s stamp of

approval and I am a bit leery of taking anything. Whenever anyone

suggests something to me, I always check with my dr. and he looks

further into it. At times he has given me the go ahead and at others

he has not. I am assuming that much of his decisions are based on

what good the supplement will do and any reaction which may occur

with medications that I am currently taking.

When I specifically asked about milk thistle, he told me no. I

currently with his approval take Vitamins C, K, E as well as bee

pollen (organic only),zinc sulfate, flora-Q (probiotic). and Oscal

with Vitamin D and he has given the okay to take flaxseed if I get

bad headaches but not to use a lot of it.

My suggestion, if your dr. is willing to consider supplements, is to

always check with him/her before mixing the two. I am also on the

same two diuretics as well as Kristalose (a form of lactalose),

Protonix, Xifaxan, Nadolol, as well as a nasal calcium supplement. I

also eat little to no meat and get most of my protein from other

sources, do not use salt and watch the sodium content of anything

that I eat or drink.

Hope this helps.

> Milk Thistle is excellent my husband is taking it. It has prolonged

his life consideralby. I suggest you go to an herbalist who knows

about the liver. Unfortunately, we did not know enought to do that

and his liver has advanced but the milk thistle is allow his liver to

still function a little. Please try to find someone who knows how to

cleanse the body.
