Guest guest
Dear All I have had an enquiry from a former patient about her son in law. After fertility tests he has been told he has no sperm motility and that it is genetic.( I have no more information on this )She wants to know if there is any thing that can be done herbally.Ive treated low sperm counts before but Im not sure if there is any chance of making a difference in this instance.Any one any thoughts. I said I would enquire of colleagues and get back to her. thanks , annette
Guest guest
Raer Annette , I treated a pt with a similar senario recently .U need to get an exact report of the fertilkity test .In clinics the proceduresd are differeent , eg , sperm collection .Many clinics store sperm for hours before testing , which can give a false reading .Having had a background in animal reproductive physiology in the development work on this area in the 1970's at UCD , Dublin , and which produced most of the groundrules for successful artificial reproductive methods , I can saw that many of the practices in these clinics is substandard . My patient went originally to a clinic and was told that he had " virtually " no sperm motility , and a very low sperm count of 158,000, and that he had no chance of conception . On questionong him about the clinic procedures , I advised him to change , to a " good " clinic . I advised him to only analyse sperm samples immediately after collection , and to analyse samples taken in quick succession , as there may be quite a difference .Inflammatory processes in the seminal vesicles , and deficits in the seminal fluid can be responsible for rapid sperm death , and therefore sperm motility levels , and these seem to affect the first sperm sample more than the second taken immediately after the first . It is worth noting that the contraceptive coil works on the basis that an inflammatory response is set up in an area about 0.5 cm , and is sufficient to kill the sperm. This mans partner also had endometriosis , a double whammy in preventing fertilisation . Each was put on a very srtict detox and diet for 6 wks , with a strict organic /veggy diet , only starting fish after 3 months . This strict pre-conceptual care programme lasted one year , and then both were advised to go to the new fertility clinic . She is pregnant with twins for over 10 wks . The critical factor in a successful outcome was that sperm count was doubled to 320,000, and sperm motility went to 10 % , the critical level for successful in vitro fertilisation . With critically low sperm counts , standard IVF will not work .The sperm needs to be injected into the egg for success . Also , a detailed drug history needs to be done , as some interfere with reproductive function , eg amytriptiline in my male pt , which I gradually withdrew , but this is not the reason for his infertility . The cumulative effects of many different measures can make a difference , and it does take time , and huge dedication on the part of both partners . Hope this helps .
