My mom says that my step-dad has pretty much stopped eating since Saturday

and has been in bed all day and night....I just got the e-mail below and

I'm worried b/c he's not taking his heart medications and such. Anyone go

through this sort of experience?

Tina

" Ed finally ate 2 or 3 bites of chicken salad and drank a little V8 splash.

That's the first bite of food he has had since early Sat. morn. He hasn't

been out of bedroom since Sat. except I helped him to bathroon a couple

times. He probably hasn't been out of bed for more than total of 20 min.

since Sat.

Last night I thought he is not going to last until Thanksgiving and I

thought Thansgiving was this Thur.

He is so shakey and doesn't make a lot of sence when he does say anything.

His eyes were so glassy, hasn't taken his medicine since Sat., says he can't

swallow them.

I just stay close to bedroom or in there. It is so sad. Love you "

Tina,

I'm sorry to say it may be time for him to go to the hospital or call hospice

and have them come to the home.

MaC,

I agree.....and I'm scared. Mom says he tole her that if he wasn't going to

get better, that he would rather go to sleep and not wake up.

My heart is breaking.

Oh, Tina I am so sorry. Will your Mom at least call hospice to help make him

more comfortable and help bring her relief also?

You are in my thoughts and prayers,

I did, Tina. I am sorry to say that it is exactly how Ardis acted in her last

weeks. I managed to extend her time by calling 911 and getting her into the

hospital, but in my heart I knew it was against her will. They made arrangements

for her to go into a skilled nursing facility and because of the around the

clock care, and attention to detail about her meds, she managed another two

months. I do believe that if I had not called 911, she would have died within 2

or 3 days. I don't regret the decision, though. I think it all happened for a

reason. Home is not the place for a liver diseaser to be when they die. There

are some here who will disagree with me, thats ok, and then there are some who

might take alarm at me saying that, but there is NO way we could have done " it "

here in my home, there is no way I could have done as well as the hospice did,

and the reason I am saying this, is that inpatient in a hospice is my final

wish, and for that

reason. It was hard to do it right, keep her clean, and warm and comfortable.

Dying hurts, from my experience with it, and they did such a good job of keeping

the pain to a minimum. Good luck, and God bless you, though. Love, Bobby

" The descions are hard to make. A person wants them with us as long as possible

but when do you let them go.

When we went to ER in Oct. they asked if I wanted to inabate him and put him on

a ventilator as they knew he wouldn't be making it otherwise. I said yes, then

the Dr said " you know this is a hard decision but the next decision will be

harder if he doesn't come around and breathe on his own then I would have to

decide how long to leave him on it  & when to take him off the ventilator " . That

really scared me. He was on it for 4 days and finally they took it off and he

was breathing again on his own with oxygen. I know the time will come in the

future to make some decisions on what is best for him again. Don't want to think

about it.

Tina - medications which don't come in capsules can be crushed and added to

food to make them easier to eat. After my carotid artery surgery, I

couldn't eat solid foods or take my pills for 6 weeks. I put my meds in

jelly, particularly liked strawberry or grape since they have a stronger

taste and cover up the taste of the meds. Anything in a capsule should be

checked to see if you can take the med out. I know some can't be because

they burn the throat. Jan H

Tina, my heart aches for you sweetie.  It is so hard to give up those we love.

My husband has the same attitude about this as does your stepdad.  It is so hard

to just sit by and let him go without DOING anything.  I think in our culture,

we are so wired to DO something, anything at all, to avoid death.  It is hard

for us to accept when someone reaches a point where they are at peace with

dying.  I just wish I could get the same peace about his dying as he has.  I am

praying for you sweetheart and for your Mom and your stepdad.  I pray the

process is quick and as painless as possible for your stepdad.  I know that, no

matter what happens, it will seem endless for you and the pain will be

immeasureable.

Love and hugs............

Diane

Thanks everyone. He has pneumonia and they have admitted him. I'm glad

he's there and they have him on IV's. I'm sure they can administer his

heart meds intravenously too.

I want to go up there but I have my Remicade treatment this morning and she

would rather me get my medication before all of this stress brings on a

flare-up of my Crohn's.

Much love,

I did, Tina. I am sorry to say that it is exactly how Ardis acted in her

last weeks. I managed to extend her time by calling 911 and getting her into

the hospital, but in my heart I knew it was against her will. They made

arrangements for her to go into a skilled nursing facility and because of

the around the clock care, and attention to detail about her meds, she

managed another two months. I do believe that if I had not called 911, she

would have died within 2 or 3 days. I don't regret the decision, though. I

think it all happened for a reason. Home is not the place for a liver

diseaser to be when they die. There are some here who will disagree with me,

thats ok, and then there are some who might take alarm at me saying that,

but there is NO way we could have done " it " here in my home, there is no way

I could have done as well as the hospice did, and the reason I am saying

this, is that inpatient in a hospice is my final wish, and for that

reason. It was hard to do it right, keep her clean, and warm and

comfortable. Dying hurts, from my experience with it, and they did such a

good job of keeping the pain to a minimum. Good luck, and God bless you,

though. Love, Bobby

Hi Tina,

I agree with your Mom.  Take care of yourself.  Your stepdad is in good hands

and they are seeing to his needs.  The situation may get worse and your Mom will

need you then.  Skipping your treatment could be devestating to your own health,

which would then make things even harder on your Mom.  I'm praying for you and

for your Mom and stepdad.  Take care of yourself so you can help take care of

them.

Love and hugs..........

Diane
