going through this too. The Dr. didn't give him a length of time but

he too.

The Dr. said he wont' qualify for a liver transplant. He is really

weak, doesn't eat much, sleeps maybe 22 hours of the day. Has been

tapped for 7 liters the first of oct. from his stomach. The dr. said

he may have to be again if it fills back up. He's on alot of pills

plus the lactulose to get rid of the ammonia build up. He's lost 66

pounds since Oct. when he went to the hospital. I will pray for you

and your loved one. Just enjoy each day they are well and deal with

the others. I have read others that have lived a long time if they

follow the low sodium diet and take all the meds and no alcohol. When

mine went into the hospital his kidneys had failed too and they told

us to say our goodbyes. Then after 2 weeks when he left those had

started to work again. They said it was from the ammonnia build up in

his body that had gotten too high. So we just go day by day hoping he

will regain his strength and get some better but in my mind I know

what the Drs have said that he may go downhill from here.

Hi Tina,

My husband was given 6 months at the outside in Oct., 2007.  He is still alive.

Predicting death in cirrhosis is very difficult until it gets down to within

days and even then people surprise doctors all the time.  When we were told, we

prepared by getting all of our legal matters in shape and by telling our

families.  Now, we just count each day as a special blessing from the Lord and

take it one day at a time.  I'm sorry, I know that's not very helpful, but it's

the way my husband handles it best.  I pray that, whatever the future holds for

your stepdad, that he and your Mom will do their best to enjoy whatever time

they have left together.  As far as what you might do to help, just love them,

be there for them and support whatever decisions they make.  You are all in my

prayers.

Hugs............

Diane

Liver Failure

Hi Group...

My mom took my step-dad to the doctor yesterday and she told them that he

was in liver failure and could have 6 months. Anyone have experience with

this? What should she expect?

As I told you last week....he sleeps almost all day and is eating very

little.

I agree. It is hard to know. When my mom was first diagnosed in

January 2005, the doctor said 18-36 months (she had bleeding varices;

that's how they found the cirrhosis). Yet, when she went to the

university hospital (she was treating with the director of the

transplant program), he said that she had 5-10 years. The first

doctor was right; she lived 32 months.

When my mom went into the hospital for the last time, it was for an

infection from a cat bite. It cleared up, but then she started

developing problems really quickly. At first, they told us three more

months, and everyone expected her to be able to go home. But she

never made it out of the hospital. In her case, it was likely because

she developed sepsis, and that really made matters worse.

It really all depends on the person. This disease is so weird --

people do better than the doctors say they should, and in our case,

worse than the doctors say they should. I hope that your step dad

does better.
