We have a program you can borrow from the DSALA that was created by the NDSS. It is called “Everybody Counts.” It includes a video and a book with teaching guidelines and instructions on how to use the program. If you would like to check it out and see if you think it would be helpful, please let me know.

“Everyone Counts: Teaching Acceptance & Inclusion is a program of the National Down Syndrome Society. It educates students about diversity, as well as the acceptance and inclusion of individuals with Down syndrome and other cognitive disabilities. By providing elementary school teachers with tools to teach these concepts, NDSS believes the result will be a more inclusive school environment and ultimately a more accepting and inclusive community at large.”

Let me know. Gail

Subject: [DownSyndromeInfoExchange] need ideasTo: DownSyndromeInfoExchange Date: Tuesday, October 7, 2008, 7:56 AM

I just was asked to set up a table at our elementary school for disability awareness week. They asked if I would just do Ds and I said that yes that would be my primary focus and also kids that look different, as is again losing her hair. The way that it is done at our school is that each classroom visits a station for 1/2 hour throughout the day. I have to have something to say and perhaps have kids do that will take up 1/2 hour of time. I need ideas. I have some books for visuals, even one that is actually in, so that is helpful but I only have a week to think up some things that will take up some time and will be effective and positive. I'll take anyone's two cents, quarters and dollars worth are even more welcome ;-))Thanks -- I'm suddenly feeling under a little pressure!!Bonnie Richbmomyahoo (DOT)
